Review of 'Girls Love Travis Walker' by Anne Pfeffer

New Adult Contemporary
Date Published:
3/15/13

To nineteen-year-old high school dropout Travis Walker, women are like snowflakes-- each one different, but beautiful in her own way.

He can charm any girl he meets, and yet down deep he fears he'll always be a loser like his jailbird father. As the landlady threatens to evict him and his sick mother, Travis takes a job he hates and spends his evenings picking up girls at a nearby night spot. When he enlists in a teen program at the local fire station, he finds out he’s amazing at it. Then he meets the smoking hot Kat Summers, enlists Kat’s friend Zoey to help him woo her, and falls in love for the first time ever.

But he keeps the details of his life secret. His girl will never love him back if she knows the truth about him….

**My thoughts**

I, too, love Travis Walker. He is a broken individual, marred by the mistakes of his father and the helplessness of his mother. He wants to do right by his mother and himself, but isn't sure how to go about doing it. He is embarrassed about his family life and all of their problems, so he refuses to reach out for any help that is dangling right in front of his face. Sure, he has been a womanizer, but he is really just searching for love to help him to heal. He just doesn't quite know it.

Despite all of his problems, he starts along a path to redemption, while still hiding his secrets. Honestly, yes, he is pretty much just looking out for himself. But along the way, he is actually helping others to heal and to get better.

I felt sorry for Travis. I wanted to jump into the story to help him out in some way, but really it was a path that he needed to take on his own. I liked the various characters who popped in and out of his life along the way, even if they were awful to him.

I read this book in one sitting. This is the third book by Anne Pfeffer that I have read. I just love her stories and the emotions that are drawn out in you while you are reading about the characters. She takes broken people and puts them back together, even though life isn't perfect when you leave them. They feel real to me, like people I could know in real life. I look forward to her next book.
