By C. F. E. Black
Young Adult SciFi
Paperback & ebook, 302 Pages
August 7th 2019 by Illuminate YA

Raised to put science over self, V must link her brain with fifteen other people, making her one of the world’s smartest humans. With this privilege comes a life dedicated to continual research inside a secluded facility, a life devoid of freedom.

But V is losing her identity and unable to predict which face will peer back at her from the nearest mirror. Escaping this life will mean freedom to think for herself—and abandoning everything and everyone she’s known and loved.

When your thoughts and speech are no longer private, freedom comes at a price. But for V the price may be her life.

Read an excerpt:
Marcus and I meet up a few minutes before seven o’clock. We have just enough time to stream and get back to the Caf for dinner. There are his frozen eyes holding so much newness they might crack and spill forth the living water within.

“I take it you had fun in the vac lab today?”

He nods, his splintering smile wreaking havoc in my gut. He and I clip off underneath a doorway stamped with words so common I don’t read them anymore.

As we approach the milky white door of the nearest streaming pod, Marcus’ excitement overflows and he begins, “Today in lab I had—”

“Hush,” I say with a small smile. Talking about what we will stream is pointless. It will all be said soon and without the chaff of words.
Only when I am with Marcus does the opaque white door before me not freeze my insides. Only with him am I not afraid of what happens behind this door. Streaming with Marcus is the one thing that feels like it belongs to me, even more than my research, which could be deleted at the touch of a button. Marcus cannot be deleted from my mind, nor I from his. And that makes me feel like, at least to him, I exist as an individual.

That is why we do this, after all. To remind us—most often just me—who we really are. Especially after a punishing day of deluge in the box—a day spent hooked up to fifteen other minds crashing simultaneously into my own—I need a grounder. I need this.

The thunder in his chest when he looks at me.

Thunder that, somehow, I create, not just another Five.

Top Five Tips for Writers to Take Control by Jolene Stockman, author of Total Blueprint for World Domination Illustrated

Welcome to the book tour for Total Blueprint for World Domination by Jolene Stockman! Today the author is sharing with us her tips for writers to take control. There's also an excerpt from the book for you to enjoy before you download your own copy. Be sure to let the author know what you think and then follow the tour for even more chances to win the giveaway at the end!

Top Five Tips for Writers to Take Control

These are my favorite ever tips to support you as a writer. Control what you can, let the rest go. Keep your energy for writing!

Your book

From the second you make the decision to write, you are in charge! You choose the genre, the word count, the content, the editing, and (if you are self-published) the cover, too. Even changes your agent and editor suggest are ultimately up to you. Your book is a fingerprint on the world, and it is absolutely your creation.

Your promotion

Facebook? Twitter? Goodreads? You choose! The amount of time, energy, and you that goes into your promotion is your choice. Forget what you could be doing, what you should be doing, or what everyone else is doing. Do what feels right for you! As Nathan Bransford says, “The next big thing is never like the last big thing.”

Your responses

An anonymous interwebber tweets you. They review your book, your baby. They call it rubbish. Crap. Badly formatted, hideously worded, error-filled-ugly-covered crap. And they do it with spelling that would disappoint a first grader. Prepare yourself. Once your work is published, it belongs to the world. Your response? Thank you. Thank you for taking the time to not only read my book, but to share your thoughts. You don’t have to correct, complain, or justify. Yes, the reviewer might be completely wrong. They might be mistaken, out of line, and all kinds of mean. (Or they might be the only person brave enough to tell you the truth..!) Either way, when someone spends money, time, and energy on you – it is awesome! One review is one review. A tweet is gone tomorrow. But the way you respond reflects on you, and a rant can reek forever.

Your intentions

Your goals are what you do, but your intentions are how you do it. You get to present yourself with professionalism, humor, warmth, and optimism (or not!) You get to choose what you put out in the world. You may get rejected, but you get to choose the agents you query, the groups you join and the writers you support. And as for who you link up with, and where you hang out? That’s right: all yours. Decide how you want to be in the world, and who you want to connect with. Because over time your intentions become who you are.

Your attitude

Chances are, even your favorite author has had some scathing reviews. Some rejection. Some slow sale days. Do you hear them going off about it? Whining? Grizzling? Nope. They’re busy. Writing.

Being a writer is a dream. It’s a top-of-the-bucket list, thing-to-do-before-I-die, can’t-believe-I-get-to-see-it-on-a-bookshelf dream. You are doing something that people aspire to. Even when the blank page is taunting you. Even when the twenty-third rejection rolls in. Even when you’re squishing rewrites in with a million other things. You are part of something amazing. Feel that with all your heart. Know that it’s true no matter what. You are a writer.

You may not be able to control who reads or likes what you write, but you can choose your words, your attitude, and your intention. Grab hold! Take control of what you can, and let the rest go. Seriously. Focus on what matters – having fun, creating the world you want, and writing your amazing next book! (I can’t wait to read it!)

Julian Fox: The Dream Guardian by E.J. Miranda

Welcome to the Land of the Wise Dreams. Enter this YA fantasy about Julian Fox, the dream guardian, who protects the dreamers of the land. There's an excerpt for you to enjoy and then you can follow the tour for more excerpts and some reviews. Please leave the author comments and questions and enter the giveaway!

Julian Fox: The Dream Guardian

It is said that dreams are just that: only dreams. But believe me, this is not always true. Some dreams are as real as the dreamer.

Thanks to their dreams, dreamers can receive the special visit of eternal wisdom that has inspired the creativity of great inventors, scientists, musicians, and even writers throughout the ages.

This creative wisdom is not always the type that appears to the eager conscience. Sometimes, a Defiler, a destroyer of dreams, is the one who tries to appear before the dreamer. These creatures were once humans, but they allowed their pain and desire for revenge to take over and seek the same miserable fate for the one who dreams.

You must not fear — Dream Guardians, also known as Kelsdrant, will always protect the one who dreams, even with their own life. They are people of flesh and bone, just like you and me, or at least they are on Earth.

The following story is dedicated to the fun, extravagant, and enlightening life of Julian Fox, the Dream Guardian.

Be prepared, dear reader. It is time to dream, laugh, reflect, and even maybe cry.

Welcome to the Land of the Wise Dreams.

Read an excerpt:
Chapter 1: The Fox Family

There is no perfect family. This is a universal truth, but if the imagination of a pair of mischievous minds is added to reality, the result can be an explosive combination that shuts the door to normalcy.

Sonia and William’s marriage is an example of how patience can be extended to the absolute limits. After all, parental love can only tolerate so much nonsense from the ingenuity of their children, especially when they happen to be Julian and Nicholas Fox.

This outlandish story begins at the crazy end of a pleasant vacation. The two brothers, Julian and Nicholas, were enjoying the afternoon heat near the banks of the river that crossed their ranch. They lay in the shade of an enormous tree, listening to the torrent of water as if it were a magical lullaby.

Julian, the eldest, was twenty-one years old. He had just completed his university studies and the memories of experiences with his classmates were still fresh in his mind. Nicholas, the youngest and last of the two children, was twenty years old and he was still studying in college.

They stayed silent for several minutes with their eyes closed, hoping that a miracle would occur and the family vacation would continue for a while longer. But, resigned to returning home in just two days, they decided to make the most of nature’s sweetness.

They must protect their secrets at all cost, or they'll be the next victim on Marked Day. Each chapter continues to fill your sweet tooth until the climactic moment at the prom where you get to have that final bite of the bitch cake you’ve been dying to consume.

Read an excerpt:
Susan looked up. “Are you threatening me?”

Jasmine smiled. “I never threaten anyone.” Jasmine pulled her in for a hug. “I’ll talk to you soon.” She winked and walked out of the bathroom. She needed to get to class, and she wasn’t going to let the help get to her.

She opened her locker and saw a red envelope. She knew damn well who this was going to be from. She opened the envelope to see a letter from the bitch herself.
My little piggy Queen. You weren’t fooling anyone with your new diet. I think it’s actually having the opposite effect on you. I shouldn’t have marked you, because the bitch is supposed to make the red dress sexy, not kill the boners of the American boy. Don’t worry my fatty Jazzy, I’ll make sure you gain the weight you were desperately trying to get rid of. Maybe then, someone might actually notice you. It won’t work out for you, though, because I hear cats are in your future, but this Queen always needs a good sob story to laugh at. -The Marked Queen.
Jasmine crumbled up the letter and tried to keep the tears back. She wouldn’t let The Marked Queen get to her. Jasmine, you already let her get inside your head. How did you think you acquired this new hobby of yours? You thought the girls looking for dates were desperate, but what about the girl trying to be head bitch? We hoped you kept believing in your confidence, because it was going to be so delicious to see it all burndown.

Author CC Bolick on the background behind Fear Justice

Do you ever wonder how stories come about? Sometimes they are inspired by true events. Sometimes they just pop into an author's head. Sometimes they are worked on for weeks and months with a lot of research. Today, author CC Bolick is sharing with us the story behind her new YA urban fantasy, Fear Justice. There's also an excerpt for you to enjoy before you download your own copy. Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments section. And then of course follow the tour for more chances to enter the giveaway!

Fear Justice

Seventeen-year-old Rena Mason counts the days until she can leave for college. Every night her father drinks himself to sleep, leaving her to care for her younger brother. When her father is kidnapped by terrorists, her dreams of freedom become a nightmare.

Stunned that her father has a history with these terrorists, Rena knows she must run or be their next victim. She learns the tough guy at school has a reason to look after her - he's working for a government agency with the same goal as the terrorists: find a woman who disappeared eighteen years ago. Time is running out since only this woman's special gift can save the world from a looming nuclear attack.

Rena can't trust anyone, especially not the stone-cold agent she's falling for. Can they save the world before Rena's feelings trap her in an agent's fight for justice?

Fear Justice contains elements of fantasy, sci-fi, and paranormal, with a clean romance. It's the first book in an exciting new series called The Fear Chronicles.

Read an excerpt:
Tony cleared his throat. “You said your dad was kidnapped?”

“Last night. Coach and my dad were friends. They joined the Army together.” Why was I babbling? Tony didn’t need to know my life story. “I showed up this morning because I thought he might know why these people were after my dad.”

“Did either of them tell you?”

I shook my head and looked at Tony. “The man who beat up Coach Andrews—he said he’d give me a head start before hunting me down.”

Again, Tony glanced in the mirror. “He didn’t happen to say he drives a black Lincoln, did he?”

As I spun in the seat and leaned over the headrest to see, the belt cut into my neck. Behind us, a black car crept closer with every second. Someone in the passenger seat leaned out of the window with a gun. “There’s a man with a gun following us and I’m not freaking out. At least, I don’t think I am.”

“No, you’re cool.”

With a bitter laugh, I turned back around and dropped down on the red vinyl seat. “Cool? When are you going to ask why I’m not afraid?”

Tony hit the brakes and made a turn that left me choking from the belt’s grip. “Right after you ask why I picked you up.”

Available on Amazon

Background of Fear Justice

Fear Justice worked its way into my head from several directions. First, I pictured this teenage girl who was a whole lot smarter and braver than me. She’d grown up living in a camper on a lake in Florida. Then I dreamed about an argument with a government agent who wore all black, including black gloves, despite the fact sweat rolled down his face with the summer’s heat. He was there to save her, but stubborn Rena Mason would end up saving him instead.

I’d already written a series which included a young agent named Travis Payne. After his dad disappeared at age nine, he was raised by a government agency tasked with protecting the people of Earth from those with special powers (think Men in Black meets X-Men). For years, his personal mission has been to find justice for what happened to his father.

Only one man knows what happened the night Travis’s father disappeared, an agent who retired and now lives in a campground in Florida.

But this wasn’t going to be Travis’s story. He was merely the catalyst. The agent who retired and lives off the grid – he married a woman with a young daughter. Three years ago, his wife died in a horrific car accident, leaving behind Rena and their son Alfie.

Rena is one of my favorite characters. At seventeen, her focus is to earn a scholarship to a college where she can become an aerospace engineer. She can’t help that her father wastes his life drinking and leaves most of Alfie’s care to her. Every A means she’s that much closer to a college dream her dad could never afford.

Although Rena is smart when it comes to school, she’s led a sheltered life when it comes to her dad’s past. After he’s taken hostage by a group of terrorists and her brother disappears, Rena has no idea what to do.

For Rena, I wanted to create a character who literally has no fear. Whether it’s punching out a bully or standing up to the principal to protect a friend who’s been wrongly accused, Rena has a strong sense of right and wrong. However, she soon learns the truth in words her mama once said, ‘not having fear won’t keep you safe.’ She’ll need help to save her dad and brother.

Travis has been sent to protect her, but he’ll get more than he bargained for when they go on the run. Protecting Rena from a group of terrorists will be the least of his worries. Accessing her special power might be the only chance to save everyone he cares about.

About CC Bolick

C.C. Bolick grew up in south Alabama, where she’s happy to still reside. She’s an engineer by day and a writer by night—too bad she could never do one without the other.

Camping, fishing… she loves the outdoors and the warm Alabama weather. For years she thought up stories to write and finally started putting them on paper back in 2006. If you hear her talking with no one to answer, don’t think she’s crazy. Since talking through her stories works best, a library is her worst place to write… even though it’s her favorite!

C.C. loves to mix sci-fi and paranormal—throw in a little romance and adventure and you’ve got her kind of story. She’s written nine books including the Leftover Girl series, The Agency series, and The Fear Chronicles.
