“Katie’s not dead!” I pulled off my robe and rubbed my body vigorously with soap. “The paramedics will save her.”

“Um…” Olivia said from the edge of the shower rooms.

“What?” Marley asked.

Olivia spun around. “There’s no more time for soap. Put your clothes on and let’s go.”

I turned off the faucet and wrapped a towel around me seconds before the paramedics rolled the gurney past the shower area and through the doors to the locker room.

Q and A with Louise Cypress, author of QUICK FIX

Is Louise Cypress your real name?

No, my real name is Jennifer Bardsley. I’m a newspaper columnist and the author of SWEET BLISS and GOOD CATCH, small town romance books written for adults. My young adult books are written under the name Louise Cypress. If you like YA thrillers, you might also enjoy NARCOSIS ROOM which includes the same characters as QUICK FIX.

How did you come up with the name Louise Cypress?

Louise is my middle name and Cypress was the name of the street I grew up on. Try that name generator for yourself and see what you come up with for a pseudonym.

Where did you get the idea for QUICK FIX?

Society brainwashes women into feeling bad about themselves all the time, especially when it comes to body shaming. I wanted to write a book that was entertaining but that also helped readers embrace body positivity.

Do you live in Seattle?

I live thirty minutes north of Seattle in place called Edmonds. Part of the fun writing QUICK FIX was incorporating some of my favorite Seattle icons into the plot, such as the Seattle Center.

Is The Royal Racer based on real life too?

Yes. The Royal Racer, the high-speed catamaran that Cole and Marley Evans work on is based on The Victoria Clipper, which ferries people between Seattle and Victoria, a major city on Vancouver Island in Canada. I’ve been on The Clipper several times and it is super fun.

When did you write QUICK FIX?

I wrote QUICK FIX in 2018, right around the time that NARCOSIS ROOM came out. The publisher and I finished edits in 2019 and planned on an early 2020 release. Those plans were put on hold due to the pandemic. Everything that takes place in QUICK FIX is imagined.

Louise Cypress is the pen name of Jennifer Bardsley for her YA books.

Jennifer writes the column “I Brake for Moms” for The Everett Daily Herald and is the author of the young adult novels Genesis Girl, Damaged Goods, Narcosis Room, and the Fight or Flight and Puritan Coven series. She lives in a book-filled house near Seattle with her family, and poodle, Merlin.

An alumna of Stanford University, Jennifer puts her psychology degree to good use writing fiction. She has a lifelong fascination with mind control. That focus also comes in handy in Jennifer’s role as a mother—but so far her children haven’t noticed.

To make a smoke bomb all you need is potassium nitrate, sugar, water and a fuse. Programming holograph messaging to be ‘smoke screen projection only’ is much more difficult. It’s a digital version of invisible ink and completely security cam resistant. I pull up Yesha’s incoming call. The smoke allows her image to take shape and it almost feels like she’s in the room with me.

“I can’t believe you talked me into this, you little gomer.”

Yesha frequently begins conversations in the middle, no introduction or formal interrogation into my life. I think that’s why I like her.

“It didn’t take much to convince you.”

“Did you receive the package?”

I hold up the box addressed to me, Sierra, but I’ve removed the contents.

“Yep, right here, see.”

Yesha’s laugh is like a chorus of toads with hiccups. Her image vibrates on the smoke.

“That’s only the box, you drone bug!”

“I know.”

I hold up the syringes that had been inside the box.

“Be careful with those. Check the labels.”

I roll a syringe in my hands like Kitchen, one of our home bots, does with pretzel dough.

“One says healing serum, which I asked for. Why does the other say anti?”

“Backup. You always need an emergency abort mission option.”

“All right. Thanks!”

Yesha interrupts before I collapse the projection.

“Just be sure not to give the anti if you haven’t given the original serum.”

Prologue 

Before this moment—on the verge of nothingness, at the hands of someone I should have suspected—I had it all figured out… at least, for the most part. There was a perfect-sized box for everything in my life. The details fit nicely in their own little containers, and I could sort them and stack them as I pleased, so long as no one messed with my system. 

Chaos wasn’t even an option—it wasn’t tolerated. 

With his hands wrapped around my throat—his sweat dripping on my face, my nails digging into his knuckles—he told me why, he told me who was to blame, but it made no sense. Until the darkness came and choked me with guilt, with regret, with self-loathing. 

I thought there would be nothing when I finally passed out, but her face was there, tears running down her cheeks, smack in the middle of the black. She told me I should have been there, should have paid closer attention, should have helped her, even when she pushed everyone away.

**My thoughts**

I need book 2!

First I have to say that reading this seriously made me not miss high school in any way, shape, or form. I hate the catty, petty drama that goes on. And it definitely seems to be more intense these days. (Yes, I know this is just a book, but still. It's a whole new world out there.)

I love Ava. She is strong, determined, and knows what she wants. She doesn't take crap from anyone, which is going to serve her well in life. But she also has a soft and vulnerable side. Usually she uses that for good, but it can get her into trouble, as it pretty much does in this book. She is one of those Type A personalities who likes to be in control of a lot, and somehow seems to manage being involved in dozens of activities while also maintaining an excellent GPA to get her into her chosen college.

And then there is Mia. She is Ava's identical twin sister, who comes off as being a really nasty person that you don't want to have anything to do with. She is clearly having severe problems of some kind, altering her appearance, going out and getting drunk, withdrawing from her friends and family. Red flags are flying all over the place. And considering some recent events with teenagers in my own life, I just want to shake both of her parents for not paying close enough attention or pushing a little harder to find out what is going on. I am also sad that Ava and Mia, who are identical twins, just don't seem to have that strong connection you would expect them to have. But there is a good reason why. It starts in this book and is why I need to read the second book.

Cade is one of Ava's best friends. He is also an ex from two years ago, and the two of them clearly still have feelings for each other. He has a bit of a checkered past from when he previously lived in Seattle with his mom. I cannot stand his temper. I don't like it when guys fly off the handle so easily and personally would remain extremely cautious, if not holding such a guy at arm's length if I saw him demonstrate his anger so rapidly. His saving graces are that he is never physical with Ava or any other female. He is also aware that he has anger issues and wants to do something about them. I also realize that he is under a lot of pressure with school and craziness with his parents, etc.

Kai is Ava and Mia's older brother who is across the world in the service. He also seems to get angry quite easily, but is fiercely protective of his younger siblings. He definitely seems to be closer to Ava than Mia. But because this story is told from Ava's point of view (alternating with Cade), we really cannot know the extent of his relationship with the other twin. I do like seeing a tight family that loves each other, though I feel like the parents are somewhat burying their heads in the sand.When they're aware of something, they are also like alpha dogs hunting down the enemy and trying to make things right. I just want them to act a little sooner. Then again, I have the advantage of omniscience. 

Ava and Cade have some amazing friends in their lives. And then there are the nasty, manipulative people who hate them. And then weird things start to happen to Ava. Because she is so determined and strong-willed, it is easy for her to piss off people. And she certainly manages to do so with a few people. So those people are retaliating and it is pretty scary. They are not sure who is behind the attacks and vandalism, but I pretty much had it figured out from the get-go.

I have to jump on my educator soap box for a moment and implore teens who are reading this to PLEASE find a trusted adult should you ever find yourself or a friend in any of these situations. These teens don't want to tell anyone what is going on, because they don't want to upset any adults or make matters worse. But that's what we are here for.

I actually really enjoyed this book. There's enough suspense and roller coaster action to keep you engaged. I actually read it all in one evening. And like I keep saying, I really need to read the next book, which is from Mia's point of view, to find out what is really going on with her.

Hi, I'm Jo. Let's forget all the "Jo Michaels is blah, blah, blah" stuff and just go with it. I'm a voracious reader (often reading more than one book at a time), a writer, a book reviewer, a mom, a wife, and one of the EICs at INDIE Books Gone Wild. I have an almost photographic memory and tend to make people cringe at the number of details I can recall about them and/or their book(s). My imagination follows me around like a conjoined twin and causes me to space out pretty often or laugh out loud randomly in completely inappropriate situations.

I have a degree in graphic design, and my journey to the end was one few students who begin that program ever complete. However, this was one case where my memory and OCD tendencies helped me. Graduation was one of the most amazing days of my life. But, my most amazing day was when my now husband proposed. Every little girl dreams of being Cinderella someday, and he pulled off the proposal of fantasies.

At the risk of sounding cliché, I'm going to let it out there and say how much I absolutely adore the man I'm married to. Along with my children, he's my whole world.

I've lived in Louisiana, Tennessee, and Georgia, but I've had my feet in almost every state. Traveling is something I adore, and have plans to someday see the Mongolia I've written about in Yassa.

“What is with all this glittery stuff?” Evie’s frustration grew as she slapped at another rack of sparkly outfits.

“Duh. It’s nearly Christmas. Everything’s gonna have some kind of glitz happening.” Shana plopped on the couch and threw herself backward, draping her forearm over her face. “You’re killing me. It’s a good thing you’re my best friend, or I would’ve traded you in a long time ago.”

“Shut. Up.” Grabbing a scarf, Evie chucked it at her friend’s head. “You know you love me.”

A grin bloomed on her over-glossed lips. “I do, but that doesn’t mean you’re not being a brat right now. Why don’t we just go to the freaking swimsuit store? You know they’ll have something beachy.”

“Have you seen their prices?”

“Yeah, but it’s not like your family is hurting for cash. What does it matter?” She sat up and threw the scarf back on the rack. It hit the metal, paused for a second, and slowly slid to the floor.

Evie bent over to pick it up and hang it properly as she answered, “Ever wonder why we’re not destitute? My parents are super frugal.”

“You guys are the definition of yuppies.”

With a sigh, she shrugged and waved her hand. “Fine. Let’s go to the swimsuit store.”

They stopped off at the coffee shop for a couple of lattes on the way. One of the baristas took the girls’ orders, and they moved to the end of the counter to wait while he fixed their drinks.

“Girl, he was eying you hard,” Shana said.

Evie turned back to look at the guy again, and she couldn’t stop the quirk of her lip when she saw him glance up, turn red, and go back to what he was doing. He was cute in a boy-band kind of way. His blond hair curled at the ends and was just long enough to graze the tops of thick eyebrows over honey brown eyes. She turned away when he looked at her again, and she grinned at Shana.

“I told you so.”

“And?”

“He’s fine as hell. If you don’t get his number, I’m going to.” Putting her hand on her hip, she pursed her lips and widened her eyes.

“No, you’re not, and neither am I. We have stuff to do.”
