Bellocaro (Teen and Young Adult Vampire Series - Book 1) by PS Meraux

A page-turning novel in the tradition of stories like Twilight or Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer, or A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest. Bellocaro is a paranormal vampire romance fueled by an unusual mystery, a magical location, and a fight to stay alive.

"TWILIGHT MEETS PRIDE AND PREJUDICE"

Bellocaro will transport anyone who loves a gripping romance to a new world.

Trapped on a mysterious island and fleeing the school jock who thinks she should be his, Skye Moon encounters a strange boy in the woods. After meeting the captivating Thatcher Blue, she is dragged into a nightmare. Skye is targeted by a vampire who wants to kill her just for being near the alluring Thatcher.

With a target on her back, she doesn’t know if she’ll survive. Skye has known fear before, helping her mother battle a life-threatening illness but never has she had to deal with a vampire stalker.

Skye hopes that the dark-eyed boy from her premonitions will keep her safe, if he ever reveals himself.

She is astonished when Thatcher and his family come to the private academy on the mysterious island run by an equally enigmatic headmistress. Thatcher has managed to keep the secrets of his monster family hidden for more than a century, but not from Skye. She rightly suspects the new kids are something other than ‘kids.’

Complicating matters is the way Thatcher looks at her, like she means the world to him because he has visions too. The pair find themselves caught between danger and longing.

Will Thatcher save her?

Or like his visions have predicted -kill her?

Profoundly thrilling, Bellocaro captures the life and death struggle for these teenagers on an island that isn’t as dormant as it appears. Readers Favorite Award-winning, best selling author P.S. Meraux brings humor and heat to this novel that will drive fans of vampire love stories wild with enthusiasm.

Read an excerpt:

Whatever was coming — it was getting closer.

Feeling tense my eyes scoured the dark bushes, trying to discern whatever was in the gloom. Tegwyn’s admonishments rang out in my memory, “Nothing should be able to hurt you here, but don’t push it.” Should? Surely there weren’t wild animals on the island too, right?

There was a flicker of movement, a dark shape barely visible against the blackness of the surrounding forest it traveled through. I narrowed my gaze trying to figure out what it was. The shape slowed. Head dipping to the ground like it was sniffing at something or had caught a scent. A thudding heartbeat later I realized what it smelled was me.

Suddenly the massive bulk of a muzzle shifted through the conifers, jaw dropping to reveal a glistening row of sharp white teeth. The intimidating display of lethal-looking incisors must have been a foot long!

Panting from its run, the creature came to a stop after passing by the last branch of a bald cypress. I used the word creature because it defied common sense. Having quickly caught its breath, the tongue pulled back in the muzzle and the paws began to move.

What I saw was freaking enormous, covered in dark fur. Paws the size of horse’s hooves were steadily coming closer. The monster was unquestionably more lupine than equine.

“Oh my God,” I huffed out a frightened breath, fearing I might hyperventilate. A chill ran down my spine that had nothing to do with the October evening breeze.

Calling it a wolf was an insult to nightmares. While it was shaped like one — it was like a wolf on steroids. The bad kind, that made the user ginormous, stupid, and overly aggressive. I imagined bulging, ugly veins hidden under the thick fur.

The clouds must have drifted past the moon, I didn’t dare take my eyes off the creature to make sure. Moonlight illuminated its fur revealing touches of gray and silver in the mud-splattered hide.

My earlier dark thoughts about stepping off the railing cast aside, now I really did wonder if this was to be my last night on Sceadu.

To the left I heard something else coming through the bushes, fast with more agile footsteps. Was there another one? My hands began to grow clammy against the cold metal.

“Oh crap!” I gulped, terrified.

Unexpectedly, as the noise of whatever followed the massive beast got closer, there was a flash of blue fabric in front of me. Then two things happened so swiftly I couldn’t tell which happened first.

“No chase! No!” A voice hissed in the gloom so softly I could have imagined it.

“What the hell—” the soft voice said a second later, sounding more aggrieved.

Darting through the branches of two mature cedars bounded another monster wolf. It shifted from the cover of the forest into the clearing with such speed that it took a moment to discern that it wasn’t alone; not one but two more giant wolves! Neither as big as the first but now swarming around it. Massive teeth nipped at the grayish creature like they were trying to bite it or halt it.

They seemed to perceive this nocturnal excursion with more intensity than their larger cousin, adamant in the attempt to get the monster wolf’s attention, trampling the weeds and grass in a slapdash manner.

Frightened out of my socks, I forgot there was nothing but a long drop behind me and lifted one foot off the rail with the intention of running like the wind, abruptly stumbling. I gasped and quickly tried to correct my mistake, wildly groping the metal rail with slick hands. My body vibrated with fear as I stared into the black abyss below.

Without warning, cool fingers gently encircled one wrist, locking it in place with the power of a vice. Another set grabbed the opposite forearm as I struggled to get my feet firmly back on the slippery perch.

“I’ve got you.”

Glancing up I saw a boy standing there. His strong hands kept me from falling to my death. A disgruntled expression traveled across his face, eyes becoming distant for several seconds as though assessing some inner thought and the grimace vanished, well almost. His mouth remained twisted down.

Staring in astonishment — my mind couldn’t function properly. Unable to fathom where he came from, I knew he shouldn’t be there. It wasn’t safe.

Incisors of the monster wolves were snapping and gnashing less than twenty-five feet away. Yet he acted as calmly as if we were alone. Didn’t he see them?

The smaller creatures seemed to be corralling the grayish wolf or altering its course. And the big one didn’t like it.

Rearing back on hind legs the monster wolf growled at the other two, immense jaws scissoring open and shut over their heads as if in warning. A deep snarl that erupted from the large mouth could have been saying, “Cut it out,” if it had a voice.

The wolf with the light brown fur ignored the warning, hurtling a muscular shoulder against the gray one’s exposed midsection. The big wolf made a gagging noise that sounded like a grunt. The second newcomer hoisted dark forepaws against the same area and together they succeeded in knocking the third backward. All three landed in an explosion of yelps, barks and snapping teeth.

I gasped.

“Are you okay?” the strange boy asked in an annoyed tone.

Too stunned by what I saw to speak, I merely nodded.

Clouds hid the moon again. The clearing fell into darkness. I squinted to see where the monster wolves were. I felt rather than saw my would-be rescuer’s head shift.

“Find him,” the boy hissed so quietly I thought I might have imagined that too. Who was he talking to?

The darker wolf growled lightly, head quickly swinging toward us before returning to the downed one, muzzle pushing against the muddy body forcing it to move with some urgency. The monster creatures merged into one shapeless blob in the shadows. Unable to see them but knowing they were out there only heightened my fear.

Review of Rebirth: Dream of the Vampire #1 by Annalise Clark

Rebirth: Dream of the Vampire

No one knows what happens when a vampire has years of her life erased...

Mira was a normal 16-year-old girl before the accident that killed her parents and took away her memories.

Then the dreams began. Nightmares. Visions of a young woman who looked just like her but was... different, like a wiser, more mature version of herself. And were those... fangs?

She thought they were just dreams...

So why did they feel so familiar, like memories of a life now lost? Her only solace was her loyal best friend, Lori, and her handsome boyfriend, Dimitri.

Dimitri knew more than he let on...

The fate of humanity and the vampires hung in the balance and time was ticking. Will she get her memories back in time to help save the world?

It was time. A vampire would be reborn.

**My thoughts**

In this day and age it feels like these YA paranormal books can be a dime z dozen. This book definitely starts out with the usual formulaic premise. Girl starts to notice weird things in her life. Truth is revealed to her at the age of 16. Now she must realize and fulfill her destiny. Hottie boyfriend.

And yet, Annalise manages to give this book its own twist to make it different enough from other books in the genre.

To get into all of the differences between this vampire book and others like it would be giving away too many spoilers, I think. Mira's breed of vampire has several unique traits that are revealed over the course of the book. I think you may find them somewhat refreshing for a change.

Mira has a lot to deal with as her true identity and story comes to light. She has an amazing human best friend in Lori and a lovely boyfriend in Dimitri. She also seems to have great inner strength that will be beneficial as the impending war and battles get underway.

I was honestly reminded a lot of Jennifer Malone Wright's Vampire Hunter's Daughter series when reading this, which I greatly enjoyed.

I enjoyed this read over a couple of Sunday afternoons, one while enjoying margaritas and Mexican and the other while basking in the sun at the lake. It's a fun and relaxing read. I know the second book is now out and the third one is coming soon. I look forward to picking up those, as well, in the future, because I want to see how this whole story pans out! I gave it four stars.

FREE today 5/1! The Blood: Secrets and Lies by Brandylan James

The Blood: Secrets and Lies

What would you do for love?

Would you lie for it?

Would you die for it?

Would you kill for it?

Would you endure centuries of darkness for just one last chance to change everything, even if you knew it was probably hopeless?

Love is never easy. But in the end, it is all that is worth fighting for ...

When the first day of senior year finally rolled around in sleepy Croft's Landing, NC, Jules Walker was definitely psyched. Not only was she going to hook up with her best bud and fellow Blud band member, Dylan Croft after the long summer vacation, but more importantly, according to the grapevine, Dylan and Landing High’s resident queen bitch, Amanda Zane were officially over. For some reason, that made Jules’ heart beat just a tad faster. However, before she even had a chance to process, much less address her newly emerging feelings for Dylan, he was already head-over-heels . . . for someone else, and not just anyone else ... for Jules' best friend, and that would be his undoing; in fact, it could prove deadly.

Enter tall, svelte new girl, Madison Janey who barreled into English Lit class in the middle of a discussion on Pride and Prejudice, balancing a schedule in one hand and an attitude in the other. That's when Jules intuitively knew three things for sure: Madison was destined to be her best friend, Dylan was going to fall in love with her, and that, in turn, was going to put them all on a catastrophic collision course.

It didn't take long. From the moment the iconoclastic "Maddie" moved into the Landing’s Inn, aka home-sweet-home to Jules and her single mom, Starr, there were far more questions than answers. Despite Madison’s somewhat fanciful accounts about her family, despite her mysterious disappearances in the late night hours, Jules was content to cut her friend some slack because that’s what best friends did. Amanda Zane, on the other hand, felt no such compunction. To her, Madison Janey said one thing: "competition," and she was bound and determined to expose her as a fake and a liar. That, too, didn't take long, but even when confronted with Amanda’s “proof,” Jules refused to admit what should have been painfully obvious: Madison was hiding something. The pills she found in her friend’s room should have been enough to raise a red flag; not to mention the dried blood stains on her clothes and the way her eyes changed and looked, well . . . not human. Then the mysterious texts started, suggesting that Dylan was in danger. The thing was, Jules really loved Madison . . . as much as she loved Dylan. Even though it hurt like hell to have to watch the two people she cared for the most falling in love, Jules couldn't allow herself to believe anything bad about Madison. It wasn't until she found her friend packing to leave town the night before Blud's big Halloween concert that Jules confronted her, mostly because she knew it would break Dylan’s heart if Madison checked out without so much as a good-bye. Though Madison begged Jules to trust her one last time and tearfully promised to tell her everything – and Dylan as well -- Jules knew in her heart that it was one more lie.

But Croft’s Landing was a town founded on lies and secrets, something both Jules and Dylan would inadvertently discover that same Halloween night: Jules, when she happened upon an old diary in Madison's backpack; Dylan, when his father revealed a horrifying truth about the Crofts.

As the moon turned blood red for the first time in over four hundred years, an ancient curse was about to be unleashed – one that set Madison and Dylan on opposite sides of two powerful families bent on each other’s destruction; one that freed an enigmatic prisoner to exact his revenge on the witch who condemned him for loving her; and one that would ultimately demand one thing: their blood . . . .

It’s started again. We’re betrayed. They’ve denounced us as witches and now everyone is calling for our blood. They’ve all gone mad. I don’t know if I’ll survive this night or if I’ll ever see Daniel again …

As Cassondra glared into her intruder’s cold, steel blue eyes, a tremor rocked her resolve.
“Where is he, Jaydon? Where is Daniel …? What have you done?!”
Jaydon Croft raised the gun, his red lips curling into a deadly smirk.
“Are you ready to die, witch?”
***
According to the village grapevine, Dylan and Amanda Zane were over. That mattered because: first, Amanda was never good enough for him; and secondly because Dylan was Jules’ best friend, and thirdly because … Jules pressed her eyes shut and made a demi-pirouette in the direction of the doorway. She couldn’t allow herself to finish the thought or even acknowledge that there was any more to it. There wasn’t. It was enough to say that Dylan Croft was special, and the real reason Jules could have for looking forward to senior year was that she would have the opportunity to hang out with him more if he was disengaged from Landing High’s resident queen bitch.

'Puzzle Trees' by Thom Mark Shepard

A high school freshman grapples with change, loss, and little green monsters.

Countless vampire and zombie novels have been published for young adults, but Puzzle Trees uniquely explores the impact of horror entertainment upon one vulnerable high school freshman.

The Story

High school freshman Joe Sheffield has only recently begun to control his obsession with all things grim and gruesome. But when two of his best friends move away, and his last best friend gravitates toward a new set of friends, Joe feels his dark fantasies and phobias returning with a vengeance, even as he is drawn to Gina, a mysterious bird-like classmate with her own dark secret.
While searching for his principal's kitten, Joe discovers that several cats have disappeared within a single day from his principal's neighborhood. Unable to accept a more rational explanation, he comes to believe that predatory green primates have moved among the "puzzle trees," those decaying woods that lie between his principal's house and his own. When Theo, his skeptical but equally troubled half-brother, pays Joe a surprise visit, they go hunting for these possibly real, possibly imaginary creatures. Their astonishing discovery opens the door to a deeper mystery, one with potentially tragic consequences, which Joe must face alone.

Meet Meg from 'Senior Year Bites (The Clanless #1)' by J.A. Campbell

Meg, welcome to Andi's YA Books! First of all, can you tell us a little about yourself?
Well, I’m a senior at Banks high school. I like math and I secretly dream of being a hero like my dad. Oh yeah, and minor detail… I’m a vampire.

Once you got used to the idea, what became your favorite part of being a vampire? Your least favorite?
Hmm, I’m not sure I’ll ever really be used to the idea, but I have to say the super strength is really fun. The least favorite part? When I’m thinking about it, drinking blood. Of course when the vampire part of me takes over, drinking blood is my favorite thing. How gross is that?

How hard was it to keep your change from others?

Hahahaha, I failed. So really hard. I only managed to keep it from my two best friends, Steph and Ann, for a short time. I didn’t manage to keep it from the guys for very long either. Alexander already knew – arrogant bastard.

For those who learned about you becoming a vampire, who do you think took it the best? The worst?

Steph took it the best. She’s all about this super hero idea. Ann took it the worst, and I’m still not sure why.
Is there anything you regret?
Yeah, a lot of things. Not getting to say goodbye to my dad properly before he died is a big one. That happened when I was much younger though, so it’s a distant ache. I regret spending the night in a graveyard.

If you could change the past- what would you change?

Truth or dare… just take the bloody Truth! Who cares if you have a crush on a boy? Admitting it is better than getting turned into a vampire.

Do you have any advice for those newly turned?

Don’t let yourself get hungry. You don’t have to kill people to feed, but if you let yourself get too hungry, you lose control. Who knows what you’d do then?

What are your plans for the future?

Um, future? I’m not sure I have one. Lurking in the dark maybe? I’m still too shocked to have plans, but I know Steph does. She’s working on something and I’m sure she’ll drag me along for the ride.

Thanks for stopping by and giving us some time today! Now about your book...

Senior Year Bites (The Clanless #1)

Release Date: 07/07/14
Untold Press

Summary from Goodreads:

Senior year is supposed to be fun: boys, dances and graduation. It’s significantly harder to enjoy it when you’re dead.

Thanks to an innocent game of Truth or Dare, I wound up sleeping in a graveyard. Probably not the brightest thing I’ve ever done, but thanks to a couple of well-placed fangs, I’m here to tell the tale.

Vampires might stalk pop culture, but they’re just myths, right? Yeah. Not so much…

Everything seems a lot more difficult when you’re a nocturnal creature of the night, especially school. I was managing, but couldn’t keep it hidden from my friends. Steph decided that we should be cool, like superheroes, and fight crime.

I’m a vampire, not a hero. Living in a sleepy New England town, crime is a little harder to come by. At least it is until a serial killer moves into the area. He’s got the authorities stumped, but then again, the cops don’t have a teenage, blood-sucking, non-hero on their team. It doesn’t take long for me to discover the world is full of monsters. I may be one of them…but will I turn out to be the hero, or the killer everyone is looking for.

Read an excerpt:
"New recruit?" Gary asked when he looked at John.
"No," I said too quickly, ignoring the questioning look from John. "This is my brother, John. He's on leave from the army. He didn't tell me he was coming home, so he could surprise me." I finished my rapid explanation in a rush.
"New recruit to what?" Suspicion colored John's voice.
"Supernatural studies club," Tad said. "You're welcome to join, of course." John's mouth gaped for a second before he snapped it shut. "Is that like studying witchcraft or something?"
"Uh...no." Gary sounded genuinely confused. "Well, I mean, witches are supernatural, so we might study them. History." He reached into Tad's backpack, glancing down for a moment before pulling a book out and sliding it across the table. Werewolves Through Time wasn't quite an accepted school textbook, but it had to be better than a witchcraft book.
"I see." John still sounded a little confused, but the spike of worry that had momentarily overwhelmed my nose subsided. "What gave you this idea?"
"Weird shit." Gage was nothing, if not eloquent.
Steph rolled her eyes. "We met at the library, of all places, and got talking. I dragged Meg and Ann in."
John seemed completely relieved, as if Steph would never lie to him.
"Excuse me. I have to use the restroom. Order my normal if they come by while I'm gone." Steph left the table.
I suspected she left so she could text Ann our new story.
"Oh, so, John, this is Gary and Tad. Sorry, I forgot."
"No problem."
Now that we had our "story" worked out, I was grateful that Gary, Tad, and Gage were there. With them around, John wouldn't bring up me sneaking out, if he did know. And with John there, they wouldn't be able to bring up this morning's incident.
Whatever creature had killed the girl had made a mess, unlike the other murders. And it had very obviously been targeting my victim, because there were plenty of people out on campus who would have been easier to get to. What the hell?
The waiter arrived, and I started to decline before I remembered John would think that was really strange. I had to order a burger and a shake, along with food for Steph, and we managed to make small talk until she returned a short time later.

"Well, don't let me interrupt your meeting. Feel free to carry on," John said.

The Icing on the Cake - Influences for 'Beacon' by Angela Brown

The Icing on the Cake

Beacon is my YA urban fantasy dystopian. That’s a mouthful. It all means my story mashes up elements of a couple of genres. And it’s by no accident. There are three major influences for my story.

First, the gist of my novel is based on The Hunger Games: Girl lives in the outliers of a revamped society > a selection process occurs > girl ends up having to go to the capital city and it’s kill or be killed. To ensure I didn’t railroad the story straight into fan fiction-ville, I chose a more “utopian” atmosphere where those who suffer are only those who aren’t registered citizens. The selection process is for something everyone and their dogs want to be chosen for: to be an Attendee at Jubilee. And when Macie, the main character for Beacon, makes it to the capital city, there is bloodshed. There is pain. But not because she’d been pitted against several other teens/preteens out to be the last one standing.

Second, fans of True Blood will recognize my interest in having the humans and vampires - or vampeer as they prefer to be called in Beacon - coexisting in the open. It’s a sort of treaty. The gift of human blood every three months to feed the vampeer is the gift of peace. As you read, you’ll learn other creatures abound.

The third element, the icing on the cake, is The Matrix. I really like The Matrix. Probably more like LOVE The Matrix. Did I mention how much I really love The Matrix? I did? Oh, good. If you’ve never seen this movie… where have you been? No, seriously, it’s more than action packed. It’s drama and it’s pulling away the smoke and mirrors to reveal the truth, in many instances, an ugly one. In Beacon, Macie knows two things: she’s only ever cared for one boy and that she’s just a girl. Nothing more, nothing less. Even this comes under fire when what has counted for normal in her life comes to a halt. She must open her mind to the revelations or drown in life’s unraveling.

As you can see, there’s plenty of reason why Beacon doesn’t fit into one genre nook. And I’m sure there are other movies or books readers find similar to Beacon. Please feel free to share. If I haven’t read it/watched it, I consider it time to beef up my to-be-read and to-be-watched lists.

Beacon

BLURB:

Tsunamis reduced the USA into a shell of itself, called The Fold. Surviving humans and vampires joined forces to form The Colony, where registered citizens do as they're told.

They donate blood quarterly and dream of being chosen as Attendees for the Jubilee celebrations, that is, everyone except Macie Breen. With high school graduation near, she’s anxious to ditch the rules in hopes of starting a new life with Thane, an unregistered and also her best friend.

Her hopes fizzle when Macie is selected as an Attendee, forever registered. Any future with Thane…impossible. Being chosen comes with another unexpected price.

Truths about The Colony blaze into ashes and lies when she discovers the vampires haven't kept their part of the bargain. Worst still, Macie’s life unravels as her stint in the city of Bliss forces her to face daunting truths about who, and what, she really is.

Read an excerpt:
The corner of Thane’s lips curved in his infamous smirk. “I’m here to protect you from you, silly.”

The elevator dinged our arrival to our floor. Thankfully, floors for the Attendees were guarded by other Surreption agents, to prevent citizens from accessing them by surprise––and to keep out the expected rebel against Bliss.

I fell silent, thinking about Thane’s answer. Any other day, it would have been a joke. We’d ha, ha, ha, laugh it off as Thane being the smartass he was. I’d punch him in the shoulder. He’d feign pain and we’d move on. But now, what if he was right? Not just keeping me from taking my anger out on some pink-haired guy making fun of me. But from whomever—or whatever—I really am. What if it was the world that needed protection from me?
