A conversation with Christy Sloat, author of 'The Crimson Key'

One of our favorite authors, Christy Sloat, is back at Andi's Young Adult Books today! This time, she is telling us more about 'The Crimson Key,' as well as giving some insight into herself.

What is the inspiration behind The Visitors series?    

Most of the stories of the house are true. My husband grew up in the home itself and had many ghostly experiences. One night we were talking and I said ,  "I am going to write a book about the brown house." He continued to tell me story after story  and I had this awesome idea.

'Crimson Key' is the second book in the series. How many do you anticipate? When can we expect the next installment? 

I see at least four books in this series and one novella. I am writing the novella now so that will be due out maybe Fall. As far as book three, I am hoping winter or early spring.

Have you ever visited the real Brown House?

No. The family sold it so I cant go inside. But I drive by it all the time.

Have you ever had your own paranormal encounter?

Yes, a few. The most recent was while I was writing The Brown House late at night I noticed my dog get spooked for some odd reason. I pulled my headphones off and a picture that hung on the wall slid out of the frame. It freaked me out . I shut my computer down and went to bed.

This series is a scary one, made for reading at night. How much did you scare yourself while writing it?

Yes I do. I try to get an ambiance set and make it dark. But, it ends up freaking me out too!

Another popular series written by you is the Past Lives series, which I also greatly enjoyed reading. Please tell readers more about it.     

That series was my first book series to complete. It's more Para-romance. Avery Snow recalls her past lives and the man she spent them with. He returns in this life and complicates things a bit. There are two full novels and one novella.

What other projects do you currently have in the works?

I am just trying to focus on The Visitors Series but I do have a secret story up my sleeve.

Which one of your characters is most like you?

Wow. Thats hard. I would have to say Kayla. she is sassy like me.

What is something readers may be surprised to learn about you?

I am a huge book nerd. I love them too much and have a book buying addiction. I also love Twilight. Yep. Huge dork.

Is there anything else you wish to share? 

I have six tattoos, I dye my own hair and I drive a Honda. Man I am glad to get that off my chest .

He’s stunned at first and doesn’t move. I start to pull away, thinking I’ve made a huge mistake, but then I feel Andy’s hand on my lower back, pulling me closer. His lips part, and he deepens the kiss.

Review of 'The Golden Apple of Discord'

**My thoughts**

This book was quite different than other paranormals I have read. In this one, a witch is targeted for reasons she doesn't know, and is unwittingly turned into a vampire. Her sisters are instructed to kill her. They have such a strong bond, though, that they refuse to do so, eventually becoming vampires themselves. They become sort of vigilantes of the night, feeding only on the scum of society. I couldn't help but think of Dexter with this part of the storyline.

Of course, this quickly draws attention to the girls and they find themselves on the run. A lot of time is devoted to them running in their Yukon as they battle their enemies. They enjoy a close-knit relationship with each other and feed off of each other. Tara is decidedly the leader of the group, but each girl offers her own strengths to balance the others. It also helps when they get to hook up with some tasty men.

This was a book that I had to read in bits and pieces, though others will be compelled to quickly read all the way through. There is all kinds of vampire and witch lore interwoven, some of which I had never heard of before reading this book. Fans of the two will find this combination to be intriguing.

Lauren Hodge is the oldest of seven children and an identical twin. She has three children and lives in Richland, Washington. “Are you all right, honey?”

I opened my eyes. An attractive young woman with red hair and brilliant

green eyes was looking at me. What I thought was salt water from the

my life? I moved from my spot to avoid more weirdness from her and

found a less populated area at the back of the ship. New York and New

Jersey disappeared behind us as we charged toward Bermuda and away

from the mess my life had become.

A cloud covered the retreating sun, sending shivers through me. A

white-haired lady dropped her purse and lots of change tumbled out. A

penny hit my foot and landed on tails.

My cell phone buzzed. I pulled it from my pocket. I had thirteen

Keith Yatsuhashi was born in 1965 in Boston, MA. He graduated from Northeastern University in 1989 and is currently the Director of the U.S. Department of Commerce Export Assistance Center in Providence, Rhode Island. 

Keith was a competitive figure skater for ten years, winning the U.S. National Junior Dance Championships in 1984, a bronze medal in the 1983 World Junior Figure Skating Championships, and a silver medal in 1984.
