'All the Colors of Love' by Jessica Freely

All the Colors of Love
by Jessica Freely

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
It sucks being the son of a super villain. At home, Harry spends half of his time getting medical treatments and the other half tied up in his father's underwater lair. It was different when his mother was alive, but she disappeared when Harry was six. He can't seem to stay out of trouble at school, and his new roommate, Antonin, thinks he’s a spaz, but somehow Harry has to find a way to stop his father's evil plans.
Antonin Karganilla wants to become a comic book artist, but other than that, being gay is the most normal thing about him. His uncle is an aquatic plant man, his aunt is a molecular biologist back from the dead, and his mom is an overprotective pain in the butt. Antonin's in boarding school and it's starting to look like he and this Harry kid might have a lot in common... and that means a whole new set of problems.
Read an excerpt:
By running the whole way, Antonin caught up with Harry on the far side of the school grounds, just before the highway. “Harry!” he shouted. “Wait! It worked! He said yes!”
Harry, still a few yards away, stopped his ground-eating stride and turned, staring at him with a puzzled expression, as if it took some time for the words to fall into coherent meaning. “It worked?” The duffel bag slowly slid from his shoulder.
Antonin leaned over, his hands on his knees, trying to catch his breath. He straightened again and nodded. “He said you could stay, as long as I kept you out of trouble.”
Harry smiled, and it was like the first sunrise after the long night of the Siberian winter, making what was cold and dark open and bright and full of life. With a sudden, lost feeling, Antonin knew he would do anything to make it happen again.
Without warning, Harry caught him up in a bone-crushing hug.
His face mashed against Harry’s chest, Antonin breathed in the smells of clean cotton and Dial soap.
Harry’s voice rumbled against Antonin’s cheek. “I can’t believe you did it. Thank you.” Just as suddenly Harry released him and stepped back. “How did you do it?” he asked, as if Antonin had made an elephant materialize out of thin air.
Antonin shrugged. “I just told him the fight wasn’t your fault, that you were doing good here, studying hard and, um… making friends.”
A quarter-sized dot of red appeared on each of Harry's cheeks. “Well, thanks.”
“Sure.”
“Uh, I guess we should get back.”
Antonin nodded, and Harry picked up his duffel bag again, and they walked back across the rolling countryside toward the school.
'Death Lies Between Us' by Jody A. Kessler
Death Lies Between Us
by Jody A. Kessler
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Saving the life of someone you love should not be the worst thing you have ever done, unless you are an Angel of Death.

Disgruntled with his position in the afterlife and conflicted by his feelings toward his new client, Nathaniel Evans forgoes the rules and saves nineteen year old Juliana Crowson from being hopelessly stuck in Forge Creek. This alters Juliana’s destiny and she finds herself in a series of near death accidents.

In the mountains of Colorado, Nathaniel comforts Juliana as she struggles to understand her paranormal abilities while coping with her brother’s drug addiction. When an ill-tempered Native American Shaman teaches her the difference between ghosts and place memories, she decides she wants nothing to do with the supernatural world. Too bad she doesn’t know that Nathaniel is part of it.

Will fate bring these two together, or has Nathaniel made the biggest mistake of his afterlife?

Read an excerpt:
He turns to stand in front of me, silent as a shadow. His hand lifts out of the dark. His fingertips brush the underside of my chin gently tipping my face up to his. How does he move and make no sound? His fingers move to my temple, brushing away a hair then trailing down to the edge of my jaw where they halt. He watches my face and looks into my eyes. I feel a surge of loneliness from somewhere deep inside him. I don’t understand it or have time to dwell on it but it makes me want to hold onto him. His gaze lowers to my mouth.

He’s so close. I didn’t see it before, but he glows. The slightest iridescent shimmer encapsulates him, so totally different than the way Chris’s aura looked. He smells good too, like I remembered, and more. It’s so familiar, but I can’t say where from. The ozone smell of clean air after a storm and hints of cinnamon and honey swirled in cream. It’s intoxicating. Even the feel of him standing near me is like a caress passing over my skin. I can’t believe myself. I’m going to let this vague stranger kiss me, and I want him to.

**My thoughts**

This was the second book by Christy Sloat that I had ever read. It's a horrible romantic dilemma to be in. Read my review here.

Ianni gave up her angelic existence to save a human soul. Killing the Dark Guides caused her to be banished from Heaven. Now she will be sent to earth to live as a human. But becoming a human is complicated. She must learn their ways and try to let go of her past life as a Spirit Guide. As if that wasn’t hard enough, now she learns there is a new threat to her friends. Will Ianni strive in her new skin or fail miserably?

Follow Ianni’s new path in this novella of The Past Lives Series.

**My Thoughts**

This short story, or novella, tells the story of Ianni and how she fell from Heaven to be human on Earth. We already knew that she fell because of the first book in the series, but we didn't know the whole story. This story fills in the missing pieces for us and gives us greater insight into her character. You feel sorry for her as she stumbles through her transition, yet admire her for her bravery.

Title- The Unraveling of Avery Snow
Series-The Past Lives Series Book # 2
By-Christy Sloat
Publication Date- February 2013
Published By- Anchor Publishing Group

Blurb-
As Avery Snow settles into her life and relationships with those around her, she fights to forget her past lives. All of which she spent with Landon, who still has no recollection of who she really is. It seems better that way. Even though she still feels a draw to his soul, she chooses to ignore it.

For now everything is fine. Her boyfriend, Dallas, has opened a new restaurant. Her friends, Ianni and Kerri, are settling into their lives as well. But when news of a new Dark Guide is revealed, Avery is forced to start thinking about the life she truly leads. One that is very abnormal. One she is desperate to forget. This Dark Guide is determined to make Avery pay for the death of someone she held dear.

Now Avery’s life has gone from seemingly perfect to falling apart. What will be at stake next? Her life? Her love? And who will be there in the end to help her up off the ground?

Even the strongest love can unravel.

Will Avery be able to hold it all together, or will she just let go?

**My Thoughts**

As often happens to me with sequels, I didn't quite like this book as much as the first one in the series. Yet, I was compelled to read it, as I needed to know what happened to the characters. I would also recommend anyone else read it, to finish the series and to find out what happens to Avery, et. al. That being said, I didn't put it down until I was done reading it.

Her heart is still torn in two different directions, though she tries to convince herself otherwise. I found myself still upset with her choice in the romance department. I felt sorry for her as she tries to determine who is going to get hurt, because there is no answer that makes everyone happy. I did find myself changing my opinion on what decisions I thought she should make. There are definite pros and cons to both decisions. You may find yourself contemplating the story even after you have finished it.

There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot. You definitely need to read the series in order, to truly appreciate the story.

In the unlikely event that another story appears in this series, I will be sure to pick it up!

I received a complimentary ecopy of this installment in exchange for my honest review.

'Beside Your Heart' by Mary Whitney

BESIDE YOUR HEART

by Mary Whitney

"It's an emotional story that will take the reader back to those feelings that made the late teen years such a powerful time.

Late one night Nicki Johnson plays with emotional fire and Googles her high school love, only to find his name splashed across the British gossip columns. Back in his native England, Adam Kincaid is successful and dating a woman from an aristocratic family like his own. With a career in politics, Nicki’s no slouch, but she knows Adam is living a world away from her life.

Yet there was a time he was no farther than the next locker. Nicki will never forget their year together in high school—the year of her sister’s death, the year her mother checked out. Adam helped Nicki through suffocating grief, and she led him through a coming of age. Was it just high school, or was it something more?

Read an excerpt:
“No British literature. Isn’t this supposed to be an English class?” Adam asked.

“Uh.” My ancestors would’ve been proud of the jolt of American patriotism that hit me. “There was a revolution two hundred years ago. We write our own books now.”

He leaned back in his seat with a smile. “I think I heard about that.”

“We still share the same language.”

“Sometimes I’m not too sure.”

“I bet not.” I could imagine what he thought of a Texas accent.

He picked up the list of books again. “What about Catcher in the Rye?”

“I read it a long time ago when I was, like, eleven.” I laughed a little as I remembered how I’d first come to read it.

“Is there something funny about that?”

“Yeah. My father had suggested I read it then. The book is the classic coming-of-age story. Clearly, he wasn’t really thinking about whether or not it was appropriate for an eleven-year old.”

“Really? Why?”

“Well, for one thing, the main character is a guy who swears a lot.”

“I suppose I swear a lot.” He cracked a sly smile. “At least compared to you Yankees.”

“Yankees? You’re in the South.” I laughed.

“What else is inappropriate about the book? Now I’m interested. It can’t only be a few swear words.”

“No, it’s not just that. It’s…” I hesitated for a moment as I realized I was about to bring up the topic of sex with Adam Kincaid. What the hell, I thought. I should be matter-of-fact about it. He had a girlfriend and would never want anything with me. I could hide I thought he was hot, so I shrugged. “Holden, the main character…he’s a little sexually frustrated.”

His eyes twinkled, and it felt as if my words hung in the air. I wanted to squirm in my seat. ‘Sexually frustrated’—like me checking out Adam Kincaid.

His proper upbringing showed again as he sidestepped the issue, yet he smirked. “That sounds like an adventurous book to be on an American high school syllabus.”

“Like I said—it’s considered an American classic.” I laughed. “I guess some things are sacred.”

“But of course.” The gleam appeared in his eye again, and he turned toward me in his seat. “Teenage sexual frustration is sort of a rite of passage, if you will.”

There went the good-English-boy manners out the window. His tone, the look in his eye, his body language—was he flirting with or taunting me? I decided the former was impossible, and if the latter, I wasn’t going to back down. With two parents who were lawyers, debate was a family routine.

“A rite of passage? More like a biological fact, isn’t it?” I asked, casually clicking my pen. I raised a brow. “Especially for guys.” “You’re right about that,” he said with a grin.

Review of the Frost Series by Liz DeJesus

Book Info-
Title- First Frost
Series-The Frost Series Book # 1
By-Liz DeJesus
Publication Date- June 22, 2012
Published By- Musa Publishing

Blurb-
Fairytales aren’t real…yeah…that’s exactly what Bianca thought. She was wrong.

For generations, the Frost family has run the Museum of Magical and Rare Artifacts, handing down guardianship from mother to daughter, always keeping their secrets to “family only.”

Gathered within museum’s walls is a collection dedicated to the Grimm fairy tales and to the rare items the family has acquired: Cinderella’s glass slipper, Snow White’s poisoned apple, the evil queen’s magic mirror, Sleeping Beauty’s enchanted spinning wheel…

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Frost wants none of it, dreaming instead of a career in art or photography or…well, anything except working in the family’s museum. She knows the items in the glass display cases are fakes because, of course, magic doesn’t really exist.

She’s about to find out how wrong she is.

**My thoughts**

I was a little apprehensive about reading this book when I first heard about it. After all, everyone is redoing fairytales these days. I took a chance when it was free for Kindle, and I am glad that I did. Liz DeJesus has done something different in the new world of fairytales. Instead of retelling those famous stories, she has made the classics a part of a new story.

Bianca gets herself lost in another world and discovers how true those stories really are. She also discovers how real magic is and discovers the truth about herself and her family. I really enjoyed how Liz wove the fairytales and their artifacts into her world. I felt like I learned something new about all of those stories that I enjoyed as a kid. I was also exposed to some new stories and want to read them.

She and her best friend Ming are whisked away upon an adventure of danger and magic, discovering new friends and enemies along the way. I love their relationship and banter, because it is so real. Their interactions with the hottie young men they find in this alternate world are also amusing, as they come from very different backgrounds and cultural expectations. I found myself wondering what it would be like to have to mold myself to those.

Bianca finds strength within herself that she never knew existed. She realizes the true value of friendship and of family. She also realizes her destiny. I was eager for the second installment to come out!

When joined together, Cinderella's slippers grant the wearer her heart's desire. But whose wish will be granted?

When Cinderella’s glass slipper is stolen, Queen Felicia sends her faithful steward Terrance to the real world to retrieve his love and witch-in-training, Bianca Frost. The power of the glass slipper, when paired with its mate, and in the wrong hands, could ruin the peace of Everafter. Bianca must gather every bit of magic she has learned in the past few weeks to find the slipper and protect her new love. Together, Bianca, Ming, Prince Ferdinand, and Terrance venture deep into the heart of Everafter to seek clues as to who has stolen the slipper and why. Along the way, they uncover what happened to the Seven Dwarves after Snow White married the prince, but also learn the awful risk of tampering with black magic and the high price that must be paid for magic, even when used for good.

Bianca and Terrance’s relationship is put to the test. Through the pain of suffering and loss, Bianca must determine if following her gallant boyfriend into his faraway world is in fact her heart's desire.

**My thoughts**

I was excited to read the second installment in this series. It was enjoyable, even though I wasn't quite as engrossed as I was in the first book. The first one was all about Bianca discovering who she really is. This one is more about her adventures under her new role in the magical world. It felt like a step along the path that will lead to an epic battle.

Bianca has reunited her family, yet has incredible responsibility in that magical fairytale world. This new responsibility puts her and her loved ones in danger, but she is compelled to do it. Those people depend on her and her legacy to protect them. She is also the key to solving their problems, especially considering her family's business.

In this one, Ming didn't feel quite as necessary as a character, other than being a sort of security blanket to help Bianca embark upon her journey. Her place is more in the real world, but I hope she can have more of an impact in future installments.

Yet again, Liz DeJesus stretches the imagination with her twists on those classic fairytales. She looks beyond the original story and finds ways to make them her own. I eagerly anticipate the third installment.

Review of 'Snow Bound (More Than Magic #2)' by Elizabeth Kirke

Blurb from Amazon:

After learning how to use magic and fighting vampires, anyone would be bored going back to normal college life. As if that wasn’t enough, Jen didn’t realize how hard it would be to tiptoe around her non-magic family and friends. She can’t even talk to her familiar, Rak, without making sure no one else is around! Worst of all, Jen misses the friends she made over the summer. Aside from Rak, they’re the only other magics she knows and she hasn’t seen them in almost five months!

Jen is all too happy to accept an invitation to go skiing with the gang. She gears up for two weeks of snow, magic, and fun. Just when everything seems to be going great, an uninvited guest turns up. Soon the skiers aren’t the only things going downhill. Jen thought that vampires were just about the most dangerous thing the magical world could throw at her. Unfortunately, she’s about to learn that people with no magic at all can be just as deadly ...

*My thoughts**

I loved this book just about as much as I loved the first book in the series. The characters are all a lot of fun as they play with their elements and powers. They enjoy topping each other and picking on each other, just like one big happy family. (I am also a New Yorker who is a Lions fan, so I get a kick out of all of the football banter!) Jen definitely feels the most comfortable when she is around them, because she can truly be herself. She seems to be growing into herself, but still has a really long way to go.

In this installment, Jen has been away from everyone else for the past five months. I do wish we would have had more insight into what she did for those five months, because that seems like an awfully long time to go without seeing everyone. I'm waiting for more lessons about her powers and abilities. She does have the opportunity to learn much more about the history of magic and more about their magical world as the new dangers present themselves up on the mountain. She also seems to find herself in the new position of being somewhat of a teacher. Old friends rejoin the cast in this book, as well as a couple of new additions. I love Dani and Charlie. This time around, I didn't confuse TS and Thomas as much. (Their names are too close!) Marianna didn't play as much of a role in this book. Sometimes, I forgot she was even there. Ember is new and has a lot of spunk. Shannon is also new, in that she now has an active role instead of being just someone mentioned. She too smart for her own good and definitely keeps things spicy!

I enjoyed the action in this book and still had a hard time putting it down. I shook my head, laughed out loud, and even got a little teary.  I did feel like Jen was a bit more of a passive observer in this book, as opposed to being involved in a lot of the action. The story is told from her perspective, so she does get a lot into her thoughts and emotions. Her biggest change in life revolves around her love life and her cousin's visit. The dynamic of those relationships change drastically.

I enjoy how the series holds true to its name. Yes, magic is involved in each book, but the stories are more about friendship and creating everlasting bonds with your loved ones. It's about finding your place in this world.

I feel like something bigger is being set up in this book. Jen and her friends are working their way up to an epic battle of sorts in the future. I can't wait for the next installment!
