Werewolf Origin

Werewolf Origin was inspired by the 1941 movie, “The Wolf Man.” This classic film starred Lon Chaney, Jr. A clan of gypsies comes into a village in Wales. Lon Chaney is bitten by a werewolf in his attempt to save a girl. The girl dies, but he did kill the monster, who was Bela, a gypsy fortuneteller. Unfortunately for Lon, he becomes a werewolf, and so begins the genre. What is not revealed is how Bela first became a wolf man; this book is a prequel to the movie and reveals this mystery.

More than that, this novella is about love, friendship, and determination. There is a strong independent woman, Larene who works with the young dedicated physician, Dr. Paul Thomas. Together as a team, aided by their friends, they experience something incredible.

Written by Dr. Alex Cullison, an author who brings imagination, adventure, romance, fear, and sensitivity to this story. Werewolf Origin was written to provide entertainment to a wide range of readers, both young and old.

Biography of Alexander C. Cullison, Ph.D.

Alex was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He is the son of a Chesapeake Bay pilot, and comes from generations of sea captains. He grew up in the suburbs of Maryland.

Upon completion of high school, he enlisted into the Air Force.

He later went back to school to become a U.S. Merchant Marine engineering officer. He sailed as a marine engineer and subsequently worked for the organization that represented marine engineers.

He was passionate about learning, and was constantly attending night classes and taking college courses. He first received his BA degree from Antioch University. Then he got his BS degree from Excelsior College of NY. Later, he obtained a Masters of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Empire. Lastly, in 1997, Alex became "Dr. Cullison" having received his Ph.D. from the Union Institute & University located in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Cullison has worked as an engineer, contract negotiator, mediator & arbitrator, substitute teacher, college instructor, and author.

He is happily married (Diana) and their son, Alexander, who is also writing a book (Twilight Sun). Alex enjoys travel, literature, education, politics, photography, boating, writing, and learning new things.

Alex has traveled much of the United States and the world. He volunteers his time and talents to worthwhile groups, such as fraternal related charities, his community, and Fairfax County.

He believes that people should share their experience and knowledge with others.

Review of 'Snow Bound (More Than Magic #2)' by Elizabeth Kirke

*My thoughts**

I loved this book just about as much as I loved the first book in the series. The characters are all a lot of fun as they play with their elements and powers. They enjoy topping each other and picking on each other, just like one big happy family. (I am also a New Yorker who is a Lions fan, so I get a kick out of all of the football banter!) Jen definitely feels the most comfortable when she is around them, because she can truly be herself. She seems to be growing into herself, but still has a really long way to go.

In this installment, Jen has been away from everyone else for the past five months. I do wish we would have had more insight into what she did for those five months, because that seems like an awfully long time to go without seeing everyone. I'm waiting for more lessons about her powers and abilities. She does have the opportunity to learn much more about the history of magic and more about their magical world as the new dangers present themselves up on the mountain. She also seems to find herself in the new position of being somewhat of a teacher. Old friends rejoin the cast in this book, as well as a couple of new additions. I love Dani and Charlie. This time around, I didn't confuse TS and Thomas as much. (Their names are too close!) Marianna didn't play as much of a role in this book. Sometimes, I forgot she was even there. Ember is new and has a lot of spunk. Shannon is also new, in that she now has an active role instead of being just someone mentioned. She too smart for her own good and definitely keeps things spicy!

I enjoyed the action in this book and still had a hard time putting it down. I shook my head, laughed out loud, and even got a little teary.  I did feel like Jen was a bit more of a passive observer in this book, as opposed to being involved in a lot of the action. The story is told from her perspective, so she does get a lot into her thoughts and emotions. Her biggest change in life revolves around her love life and her cousin's visit. The dynamic of those relationships change drastically.

I enjoy how the series holds true to its name. Yes, magic is involved in each book, but the stories are more about friendship and creating everlasting bonds with your loved ones. It's about finding your place in this world.

I feel like something bigger is being set up in this book. Jen and her friends are working their way up to an epic battle of sorts in the future. I can't wait for the next installment!

Review of 'Paranormal Days Gone Awry'

**My thoughts**

Vampires, witches, and zombies, oh my! And elementals and weres! You name it, this book has it!

I had purchased this book during a sale, because I am familiar with many of the Anchor Group authors. I was ecstatic when my book club chose to read it this month. By this time, I was caught up with even more of the authors than I had been before reading it.

I love reading books by Elizabeth Kirke, Christy Sloat, Stacey Rourke, and Karen Pokras Toz. All four of these ladies have stories featured in here, along with 9 others. Some of the stories provide more insight into characters in the full-length novels, such as the short about Dani and the kids by Elizabeth Kirke. Stacey Rourke's story about Keni was already familiar, as it also appears in one of her novellas. Christy Sloat's short about a vampire is an example of an author showing off a different side of her writing skills. Karen Pokras Toz's Nate Rocks is one of my current favorite middle grade series.

I also really liked Dana Piazzi's "Full Moon Flip Flop" and "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" by Katherine Polillo. I am not usually a fan of short stories, but these kept me plenty entertained.

This book is a fantastic introduction to the authors who make up the Anchor Group. It has something for everyone. Following each story is that author's bio and a listing of their other books, so you can catch up on ones you may have missed before.

'Willow' by Amy Richie

**My thoughts**

This is probably my first book that I have ever read with a were as the main character. Most of the books that I have read had weres as supportive characters. That being said, I did enjoy this book, as I usually do those published by the Anchor Group.

Willow is already well aware that she is a werewolf, and has had some inkling of her destiny, thanks to stories told to her throughout her childhood after she was turned. Suddenly, she is whisked away and has to become the leader of her own pack, and to protect them and guide them. But she still has so much to learn and hates what she is, anyway.

What I liked about this book was its quick pace and ease of reading. Willow does grow and mature somewhat through the book as she has to take on more responsibilities. I liked most of the other characters and their chemistry.

I did feel a little lost here and there like I had missed something and felt like some areas needed more development. Some things were explained away rather quickly. But I have faith that as the series continues, the story will grow stronger. I look forward to checking out more of it in the future.

She caught his look. Oh God, she’d been staring. Her mouth was practically watering. The heat forming in her cheeks brought her back to reality. And the way he watched her nearly brought her to her knees. Looking into those pale-green eyes with the golden rim made her weak, left her breathless. He couldn’t be more than eighteen or nineteen but there was a knowing look in his eyes that made her want to find out what, exactly, he knew.

She took a step toward him and the knowing look turned darker, hotter. There was something raw about it. Something ravenous, and so powerful she could barely keep herself from being consumed.

He tilted his head slightly in her direction, and it seemed almost as if he was…listening to her. As if he were trying to puzzle her out by catching the subtle beat and hum of her body.

It finally dawned on her that they’d been standing there a good while in complete silence. She managed to shake herself out of her lust-filled stupor long enough to recover something vaguely resembling her manners. “Ah, about the other night…Thanks.” 

My thoughts:

Breena is a tough character. She has a hard edge to her, which is no surprise after being in foster care for her first 18 years. She was abused for a lot of it, yet managed to come out with a big heart. Her foster sister, Jenny, means the world to her. She will do whatever it takes to protect her.

Her swinging devotion between the two men in her life almost makes you seasick. Whenever she is with one, she wants the other. In the heat of the moment, she can quickly change her mind, adding to the frustration she already has about her true situation. You personally feel the frustration. You want her to make up her mind, already! Ah, to be so lucky as to have two alluring men after you at the same time! You can forgive her, though, because you are just as confused as she is.

You also have to wait a frustratingly long time to get any of the truth out of anyone. Situations keep popping up that make no sense. Tidbits of information are revealed after each one. Granted, your head (and hers) is already swimming, trying to process the current knowledge, let alone adding any more. Again, this allows you to really feel what Breena is feeling at that point in the story. It's hard to know which way to turn and whom to trust. Even at the end, she still isn't sure. Her story is just beginning...

Karen Y. Bynum is an author of young adult paranormal fantasy.  Her novel Witch Way to Turn is published through Lyrical Press.  She grew up in Hickory, North Carolina where mountains and magic surrounded her.  Even as a child, she wrote her own faery tales and prattled incessantly to her imaginary friends.

After graduating from UNC Charlotte with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Media Communications, she went on to become certified in culinary arts from The Art Institute of Charlotte.  But it wasn’t until her aerospace engineer husband accepted a job in Virginia and they relocated that she knew what she wanted to be when she grew up.

With the support of family and friends, Karen embarked on a journey with the voices in her head.  They wouldn’t stop talking (yes, she does answer back) and their stories took shape.
