First in the Series Synopsis:

I should have known when he walked into my life that things would never be the same. Hadn't I dreamed of him and the things he'd done before I was born? If only he weren't so fascinating, so beautiful, so much more than any other guy. Maybe then I could walk away.

Mairin Cote is a magnet for weird. Her dreams come true, she can see auras and her mother is in love with an angel. Now the monsters are finding her too. Vampires, demigods and werepanthers have flocked to this small town girl who must find a way to keep her family safe, love the man of her dreams, and navigate the shark-infested waters of Highland Home High School.

Read an excerpt:
Chapter 1

The young woman sat beside the bed, holding the boy's hand. Her lips moved in silent prayer, pausing only when he moved restlessly and moaned.

"Mathias?" Her voice was soft but rich.

He moaned again, but didn't wake. The young woman began to pray once again.

"Kathryn!" Mathias sat upright, searching the room with blind eyes. "Kathryn, run. Don't look back, just go!"

"Mathias, my love, I'm right here." She helped him lay back, smoothing her hand over his fevered brow. "Rest, my darling. You'll be well soon."

Mathias lay down, tossing restlessly. From time to time, he would whisper "Kathryn," before slipping farther into unconsciousness. Each time he spoke her name, Kathryn kissed Mathias and resumed her prayers.

Hours passed, but Kathryn, consumed by the life that drained from the man she loved, didn't notice the light draining from the day. She prayed. She held Mathias' hand. She soothed him when he was restless. Outside the window, the sun sank into the horizon. The sound of waves crashing against the shore slipped into the silence that now filled the room.

As the last of the light left the room, Kathryn rose to light a candle. When she returned to her place by his bedside, she set the candle on the table and leaned down to see Mathias better in the flickering light. She put her hand upon his chest and then sat by his side and lay her ear against his still chest.

"No," she whispered, curling her hand into a fist on his chest. "Oh Mathias, I can't live without you." Tears slipped down her cheeks as she closed her eyes and let the grief take her.

Mathias' eyes snapped open. Had she been watching, Kathryn would have seen that warm, dark eyes of his life were gone, replaced by pools of deepest, coldest black. He reached for Kathryn's hand where it lay on his chest, pulling it up to his lips.

"Mathias?" Kathryn blinked away her tears. Her eyes opened wide in disbelief, but there was no fear in her gaze, only the love she had for this beautiful boy.

Mathias licked his lips and ran his nose along the length of Kathryn's arm. She stayed frozen by his side, mesmerized by his gaze, which never flickered from her own. Even after his teeth sank easily into the warm flesh at the bend of her elbow, Kathryn never flinched. The room filled with a wet sucking, disrupted only by Kathryn's one brief gasp. Mathias lovingly cradled her arm against his lips as he drank, insensitive to the monstrosity of his act.

When Kathryn lay pale and still, Mathias blinked slowly. He looked down at the beautiful, pale and cold woman whose glassy eyes were riveted on his face. He brushed his hand along her cheek, lovingly caressing her face as he had done so often in life. It was only when she didn't smile and ask for his kiss that understanding slowly dawned in his gaze and he screamed.

"Kathryn, my love, my heart, my sun. What have I done?" His hands pulled at his face, drawing it into a gruesome mask of pain and anguish.

Lifting her body with infinite care, Mathias lay Kathryn on the bed from which he had so recently risen to this new and monstrous life. He closed her eyes and kissed her pale lips lovingly. "I will mourn you for eternity," he whispered before he threw himself out the window.

***

My eyes snapped open, my heart galloping along as though I'd just run a marathon. The last image of the young man's anguished face, hauntingly beautiful in his pain, lingered in my mind.

"Mairin, are you okay?" my mom called from the hall outside my bedroom.

"Yeah Mom," I said. "Just a weird dream."

Mom stepped into my room and sat with me on my bed. "Want to tell me about it?"

I shook my head. I wasn't sure how to explain what I'd just dreamed. I knew from the clothes the two people had been wearing that the dream wasn't one of my premonitions, but I had no explanation for who Mathias and Kathryn were or why I would be dreaming about them.

"I think I've been reading too many romance novels." I said, laughing and trying to ease my mother's anxiety. "This one was set in the 1920s I think. Just a boy and a girl. Nothing to worry about."

Mom kissed my forehead. She always worried when my dreams woke me, even when they weren't nightmares or premonitions. "Think you'll go back to sleep tonight?"

"Probably. It wasn't really a bad one." Unless you counted murder as bad, I added silently

"You need to sleep more, baby. Tomorrow's the first day of school and you'll want to be on the ball."

"I'm fine, Mom. Really. It was just weird, not scary and definitely not a premonition."

OK, so that was a lie. Watching that boy drain the life out of his love made my stomach somersault with horror, but I didn't feel like explaining that to my mom in the middle of the night. Despite what he'd done, Mathias didn't strike me as evil or sinister. His obvious grief over what he'd done in my dream hinted at a deeper, purer soul than the act would seem to allow for.

"Okay, okay, I can take a hint. Sleep well, baby. I love you."

"I love you, too, Mom."

I curled onto my side, clutching my pillow after Mom went back to her room where her partner Tawnya was probably waiting for a report of my dream. I knew sleep should have been a dim hope after the dream I'd had, but strangely I didn't feel frightened or threatened by this dream. There was something so compelling about Mathias that I found myself hoping he would be waiting for me when sleep claimed me once again. I closed my eyes, whispering his name and willing him to come to me. When he appeared, waiting at the edge of darkness where dreams live, I reached for him.

'Shifted Perspective' Book Tour Promo Blast

Shifted Perspective
Tails of Change Book One
By J. Bridger

Genre: paranormal young adult

Number of pages: 192 (as a word doc/.PDF)
Word Count: 69, 977

Cover Artist: Rebecca Weaver

Book Description:

Caleb Byrne is a bright high school senior who has enough to deal with between college choices, taking care of his single dad, and dealing with his headstrong girlfriend Joanna and an eccentric set of cousins in California. He was managing to get by until the day he woke up a Cocker Spaniel. Even if it only happens monthly and is more embarrassing than painful, the so-called ability is something that he's anxious to be rid of.

He didn't realize his transformations would drag him into a hidden society of canine and lupine shape shifters as well as a family legacy he hates. To make matters worse, after moving to Los Angeles to learn more about his heritage from his Aunt Moira and his cousin Kalista, Caleb now struggles through life-and-death matters. He keeps angering the werewolves in charge of the shifter world, especially Kalista's boyfriend Peter, the Southern California alpha's son, who also happens to be grade-A sociopath. Worse, Caleb's floundering to keep his secret from Joanna.

While his family offers him some support, they may not be enough as Caleb realizes that the rules in shifter society---number one being don't kill humans---are not so ironclad. Some werewolf out there is leaving a blood-soaked trail across the Midwest and it might just be with the alpha's blessing...

Read an excerpt:
Things were good for a while.

School got back to session, I exchanged a few polite emails with Kalista, and Joanna and I went back to keeping The Gazette afloat even if it was far from popular. It was also a great relief and thrill to be able to send my uncle's check to my new alma mater. Duke class of 2016 that was me.

Then, about a month after finals, maybe the sixteenth of January or so, my hearing got worse. It was so bad that when I woke up in the morning, it felt like the morning news dad was watching over coffee was going to kill me. That or someone was taking a railroad spike to my skull every time the anchor talked. Rolling over, I pulled the pillow over my head and hoped I'd die. I'd never had a migraine so severe before that I was seeing auras; I wondered if something was wrong with me like a tumor.

When dad knocked on my door, I shuddered. "I can't go to school today," I said under my nest of pillows.

"Son, look up at me."

I did as I was asked, even if it was reluctant about it. "My head is staging a revolt. I have a migraine."

My dad came to sit at the chair by my bed and frowned. "Your pupils aren't the same size and your eyes are pretty bloodshot." He reached up and put the back of his hand to my forehead. "Do you have a fever?"

"Do I feel like it?"

"A little warm. You haven't missed since a cold in September, so I think it's alright. You're not exactly pulling a Ferris Bueller. I want to give you a day to get better, but if you don’t, you’ll have to go to Dr. Seiberman."

I shuddered. “No, I’m not that bad off, just hurts. Besides, that's great. A day off from the school grind and I just want to curl into a ball and die. I...my hearing is awful. Everything's too loud, like a throbbing all over. Can you not have the TV on for a while?"

He blinked back at me, dumbfounded. "It wasn't that loud downstairs."

"It was bad enough, definitely. I just think I'm going to pass out with the curtains drawn and see how it goes from there."

I guess sometimes pillows can be good for more than comfort because after my dad left, being careful not to stomp his boots on the way out, I managed to fall to sleep, my dreams odd for me, about running through the woods by Pilot Mountain, chasing something that remained mysterious throughout the day and night.

Even now, I have no idea what it was, can only guess.

**

When I woke, I knew something was off. The sun was just rising over the horizon and I had no idea how I'd managed to sleep almost for twenty-four hours. My hearing didn't pound in my head, but that wasn't reassuring. Shaking my head, I shivered with the cold. I'd slept walked again and of all things come to rest on the sofa downstairs.

This was getting ridiculous but at least it didn't involve waking up tangled in drying deer hide. Thank God for small favors.

"Christ this is pathetic," I said to no one in particular. Then I froze, everything muscle in my body taught.

I hadn't heard my voice, not at all.

But I had heard a series of plaintive barks.

What in the world?

Scared, I started just trying something simple, starting into the alphabet, but it was just more barking. I gulped and braced myself. Looking down, all I saw were four modest-sized black paws.

I could only hope I was hallucinating.

Author Bio:

J. Bridger has had an eclectic life. She’s worked in the psychiatric ward in a hospital in La Paz, Bolivia, been a veterinary intern giving all sorts of better-left-to-the-imagination exams to dogs and cats, and had her own spate in creating and running a television ad campaign. Currently, in her day job, she is getting her certification as a medical Spanish interpreter in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina.

By night, she’s a fledgling author, who has just penned her debut novel, Shifted Perspective; she is currently working on its sequel, the next installment of The Tails of Change Series. J.’s always loved things that go bump (or that howl) in the night and devoured Stephen King, Anne Rice, and Clive Barker starting in middle school. Her favorite shows are no less preternatural and include Big Wolf on Campus, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Teen Wolf. While she’s been writing fiction for eight years and been published in several academic journals for her psychological research, this is her first venture into published original fiction.

J. Bridger lives in Raleigh with two Yorkies, a beagle, and a Schnauzer-Yorkie mix (as well as far too many dust bunnies).

'All Things Different' Book Tour with Giveaway

Synopsis:

Late in the summer of 2005, starkly independent Jake Thornton was on the verge of turning 16, expecting little more than his driver’s license in the fall, and the continuance of the quiet life shared with his father. So when 14-almost-15 year old Sara moved in next door and began vying for his father’s attention, Jake wasn’t exactly thrilled, and couldn’t quite understand his father’s motives for allowing it. But certainly he never anticipated the dramatic shift their lives would take as a result.

As the summer fades and autumn takes over, friendship between the two teenagers begins blossoming into a bond, until fate steps in once more, threatening to tear them apart as quickly as they’ve come together. The decisions that follow, and the emotive tale that results, opens Jake’s eyes to the simple yet life altering truth, a truth that Sara has understood all along: that love—not the feeling but the action—is the most powerful force in the world.

Read an excerpt:
Outside I headed straight to the shop. In passing I saw a thin mist rising from the lake. My heart was beating nicely. I gathered the fishing gear while Dad turned over the boat and put the floats in place before the seats. I was cold but warm inside and very excited, hurrying to the point where I was getting clumsy in my cold-fingered excitement.

I stepped out the side door of the shop with my hands full of gear and my head full of early-morning promise. Then I stopped dead in my tracks. Sara was there. She’d gotten to my old man while I was inside. I hadn’t heard her over the commotion, but there she was, sure as hell, with my father helping her fasten a life vest over a yellow sweatshirt. I watched for a moment, taking slow, deep breaths.

“Hi, Jake,” she said as I neared them, smiling in bright-eyed, tight-lipped triumph. Her hood was up with the strings drawn, and her head was partially immobilized due to the bulky, ugly orange life vest.

I said nothing and dropped the poles and tackle box into the center of the boat. The tackle box gave a semi-satisfying thud against the bottom. Sara jumped slightly.

“Here,” Dad said, ignoring me. Leaning before her, he pulled the hood strings a little snugger. “You don’t want that cold wind in your ears, where you’re not used to it. Once it warms up, you won’t need it anymore.”

“Thanks,” Sara said, smiling very big.

“We don’t have another pole,” I said. “The reel on the spare is broken.”

“She’ll use mine,” Dad said.

I climbed into the bow and took my seat facing forward. At the time I would’ve bet a thousand bucks that she was making faces behind my back. Ha-ha, I won!
**My thoughts**

This coming-of-age novel was a breath of fresh air in an inundated world of vampires, werewolves, etc., even though I do enjoy my paranormal romances. The relationship between Jake and Sara feels a bit more realistic, as it has to build over time instead of instantaneous love in so much other fiction. There is plenty of emotion and depth to keep your mind engaged with its story. The descriptive setting makes you want to close your eyes and go there.

ISBN: 978-0615658445
ASIN: B008G7L6TS

Number of pages: 295
Word Count: 97800

Book Description:

Falling in love, baking a magical cake, fighting an evil necromancer—it’s all in a day’s work for Audrey Oliver, seventeen-year-old witch-in-training. When her mother goes missing and her mysterious "cousin" shows up out of the blue, Audrey knows something’s gone horribly, dangerously wrong. Now it’s up to her to get her own magical powers up to speed before everyone she loves is destroyed by the sorcerer intricately connected to her mother’s secret past.

**My thoughts**

When the option of reading and reviewing this book came across my inbox, my gut instinct was screaming out, "YES! Read this book!" My instincts were completely correct. I fell madly in love with this book from almost the very first page.

Sure, it's a little Harry Potter-esque, as are many of the other books about witches right now. Main character has occasional strange experiences, only to find out later that she is a witch and has an arch-nemesis after her. Something about this book, though, stands out from many of the others. Audrey is immediately likeable and feels real to me. I can see myself and some of my friends from back in high school in her. The voice in her narrative rings true. The story is told in a captivating manner that keeps you flipping the pages, even if you are bone tired. The element of romance with hottie sorcerers doesn't hurt, either. I eagerly await the sequels.

Title: Mana

Author: Asher Tensei

Genre: Fantasy

Eurich is thrown into a seemingly ill-fated destiny. After learning of his legendary magic, he is convinced that he alone must stop an
impending doom, but nothing is ever as it seems. His best friends
Jason and Raine try their best to help him save the world, but help
isn’t what he needs —he needs a way across the barrier.

Despite this fate thrust upon him, Eurich knows what is coming. The world is headed toward Chaos due to a weakening barrier between Earth and a world that has been hidden for millennia.

Our world is about to take a sharp turn for the worse. Extra moons
are rising in the sky, and panic is at an all-time high. Worst of all, there are no explanations.

Saving the world begins with a choice —but is humanity worth him risking his own life?

Book Excerpt

“Freedom!” Jason opened the door to Eurich’s house and the first thing he did was run up the stairs to Eurich’s room. “You mind if I crash here? I swear I’d fall asleep on the way home.”

“Don’t worry about it. You know you’re welcome here anytime,” Eurich replied, laying down sheets and pillows on the floor.

“What’s that for?” asked Jason. “I’m getting the bed.”

Jason and Eurich both laughed, but it was short lived. Jason scowled, grimacing, not hiding the fact that something was bothering him.

“What’s wrong?” asked Eurich.

“Why did Mr. Andrews take only you and Raine, what happened up there?” Jason rarely took a depreciate tone.

“It was nothing much. He just wanted to talk to us about grades and stuff,” Eurich stuttered a little.

“I saw…that thing you turned into.” Jason didn’t waste any time.

“Wait…what?”

“You had wings, and you fell, and you didn’t die. It was…you were black and purple…and-and, the sky turned purple…why didn’t anyone else see it?”

“Jason, it’s okay, just calm down,” Eurich said, sitting down at his computer desk. ”He said no one could see us…” He slid to his drawer, quickly opening it to grab the book. There
was a moment of pause before he tossed it on the bed “It turns out everything in this book is real,” he said while flipping the pages. “Mr. Andrews knew, my parents knew, and even Raine’s mother knew.” He then flipped the page to Oblivion. “This…is my father, and I guess this is me now.”

“Eurich, you can’t expect me to believe that you were right this whole time..”

“Jason, you said you saw it with your own eyes…I’m a dragoon.” Eurich sighed. “Just…don’t tell anyone.” As a last resort, since Jason had a hard time believing him, he stood up focused his mana in the stone and transformed.

He has always wanted to share his creative writing, and it was in Germany that he realized people also really enjoyed reading his stories. Mana was composed shortly after and it instantly got the support of a small but enthused local readership. Few could believe that Asher had written a full length novel during his fifteen minute breaks while working at Burger King. **My thoughts**

Kimber Shook is shaking up the YA genre by taking a familiar teenaged tale of triangular love and twisting it with aliens instead of vampires and werewolves. It's a nice change of pace for a change, even if the fundamental story is the same. Girl meets hot guy. Girl meets another hot guy. She can't make up her mind, because destiny and desire are pulling her in two different directions.

For those of you who like a book that is nicely wrapped up at the end, look out! Sure, Vanessa makes progress in discovering all kinds of secrets and weighing her options. You won't know the true end of the story until you read the sequel.

About Kimber Shook

I’m a huge sci-fi fan. I love all the paranormal, fantasy and sci-fi genres, of course, when romance is thrown in, it just makes it even better.
I grew up with a desire to write. Now being considered a middle-aged woman I have decided I’m running out of time. I stopped taking for granted the amount of time I have left to live and take matters into my own hands by actually working on a dream.

Writing a novel, Destiny Unhinged. It’s a great feeling to say I’m not just waiting for life to come to me, but rather I’m going after it and not
letting go.

'Reflection' Blog Tour - Review and Giveaway

Reflection
By Jessica Roberts
Release Date: 02/17/12
E-book
289 pages

Book Description from Goodreads:

Bright, spunky Heather Robbins has escaped her small hometown and is anxiously beginning her freshman year of college. Rising above her rocky childhood, she’s found a place where good things are finally starting to happen: her own private apartment, refreshing college classes, and an intense attachment to a mysterious and rugged classmate, Nick Richards.

But when her dreamy college life turns out to be nothing more than a wonderful dream while resting in a coma, questions threaten.

Now, Heather must press forward to unlock the real past, and find the answers buried deep in her mind. What she unlocks instead is a roller coaster ride through flashbacks, embellished memories, and a whirlwind romance.

And when it’s all over and she comes face to face with the truth, will she lose everything she’s fallen in love with?

**My thoughts**

Heather's story is a heartbreaking one. I cannot imagine what it must feel like to be trapped in your own mind like she is. She is telling her doctor her story about going to college for the first time, which is all she can remember from before her accident. Your brain feels as fuzzy as hers as she weaves her tale, that often blends past and present or two different pasts. I picture it like a movie in which suddenly the shot cuts away to a distorted image or a staticky voiceover. You feel her anguish as she tries to sort it all out, to come up with simple vocabulary words, and chases people who may just be a figment of her imagination. Your heart aches as you also are trying to figure out if Nick is her true love or if he is just a snippet from her dreams. I was completely drawn into her search for herself and the truth. The end will surprise you and leaves you hanging a bit in anticipation of the follow-up. I need to read the second one to find out what else happens!

Review of 'Torn' by Amber Lehman

Torn by Amber Lehman is the story of fourteen year-old Krista McKinley, who has transferred from Catholic school in Ohio to public school in California. Talk about culture shock! But she quickly finds friends in Carrie and Brandon and makes her place in the school society.

Those early teenage years are already confusing enough as it is. But add sexual ambiguity and experimentation to the mix, and welcome to a scary spiral of self-doubt and questioning.

Krista's first bout with confusion comes when she realizes that Brandon is actually gay, even though every girl in school seems to want him. He throws men and boys away as easily as he throws his money around, seeming to not care what damage is created. Yet, she is highly devoted to him.

Then comes an intoxicated experiment with Carrie, that brings their relationship to a new level for them both. How should it really be defined now? What do they really owe each other? What is normal?

Seeking answers is difficult, as her father has long disappeared, her mother is doing missionary work overseas. Her brothers are wrapped up in their own worlds, and would freak out if they knew what she was really doing. And then she is highly attracted to her virginal almost-30 year-old Bible Study leader, who is also the older brother of one of her other friends.

Relationships between the friends become increasingly complex as they struggle to answer these and many other questions about life, love, and lust. Their predicaments, while possibly extreme in the wealthy California setting, can probably found in just about any town in America, though it used to not be at such a young age. These types of games and experiments used to only happen during the freedom of college.

Amber Lehman herself said that though the characters in this book are in high school, it is actually written for the 17 and older crowd. The topics presented within are quite mature and would probably be better for a slightly younger crowd if read with a trusted adult.

Nevertheless, I found it to be a very good read. I had a hard time putting it down once I got started. And I am sure I will read it again some day.

I received a copy of this book for the purposes of reviewing it, from the author, Amber Lehman.

Back to Bataan Summary

New York City, 1943. War is raging in Europe and the Pacific, while Jack Dalton is stuck attending Dutch Masters Day School. What Jack really wants is to enlist in the army, to fight...

Everything changes when Coco, Jack's "fiancee," throws him over for one of his classmates. Jack sees red and does something drastic. Then he runs away. Hiding out in a nearby park, Jack joins ranks with a group of vagrants and is soon under the sway of a man called the Leader, an ex-convict who is as articulate and charismatic as he is dangerous. The Leader turns Jack's world upside down. To put things right, Jack must prove himself a braver soldier than he ever imagined.

**My thoughts**

Back to Bataan is a different kind of young adult book, at least for more modern literature. It is reminiscent of older classics by authors such as Hemingway and Salinger. The characters are more mature than one would expect 11 year-olds to be. They are deeper thinkers who are more concerned with world problems and the effects of those on their personal lives than shallow current trends. You can read this book quickly, but you are forced to stop and think more about what is being said than you do when perusing the contemporary trendy books about vampires.

I think to fully appreciate this book, readers will want to brush up on their history. Learn more about Bataan and the horrors of the Nazi regime. Read about how families at home struggled during the war, even here in America. Why is it so difficult for them to find proper food? Why is it so bad that Hans is suspected of being a Nazi? What are Jack's stories really trying to tell us? There's more going on here than meets the eye.
