Interview with Andy Gavin, author of 'Untimed'

Today, I would like to welcome Andy Gavin, author of 'Untimed,' to the blog.

What was the inspiration behind Untimed?

Typically, Untimed began from a fusion of ideas. Lingering in my mind for over twenty years was a time travel story about people from the future who fell “downtime” to relive exciting moments in history (until things go wrong). I worked out a time travel system but had no plot or characters. Separately, in 2010, as a break from editing The Darkening Dream, I experimented with new voice techniques, especially first person present. I also read various “competition.” One of these was The Lightning Thief (the first Percy Jackson novel), which has an amazing series concept (if a slightly limp execution).  I love mythology and history, and liked the notion of something with a rich body of material to mine. I wanted an open ended high concept that drew on my strengths, which brought me back to time travel.

Some of the mechanics from my earlier concept merged well with a younger protagonist, voiced in a visceral first person present style. I started thinking about it, and his voice popped into my head. I pounded out a chapter not too dissimilar from the first chapter of the final novel. Then the most awesome villain teleported into the situation. I can’t remember how or why, but it happened quickly and spontaneously. Tick-Tocks were born (or forged).

Which character was the most interesting to write?

Untimed’s single first person POV is Charlie, and he was very fun to write. He calls things as he sees them, and given his basic naiveté, that’s pretty funny. We’re inside his head, and nothing is really sacred there. This can also be contrasted with what he does and says, which is sometimes not as bold as he thinks. Dialog-wise, his love interest, Yvaine, is also a blast because she’s incredibly direct and not afraid to work it.

What are your top 3 time travel destinations?

Personally, I’d love to visit the ancient world, mostly the great cities. Rome in different eras (Republican, Imperial, etc.). Egypt during the peak of the New Kingdom. Pericles’ Athens. Justinian’s Constantinople. Alexander in Babylon. All good stuff. We can bet that Charlie will be heading downtime sometime in the future… uh, his meta-future that is.

If you could travel through time to witness any event or to hang out with any person, where would you go and whom would you visit?

Alexander the Great. Conquering half the world is just too cool to resist. Plus, he knew how to party.

If your book was being turned into a movie, who would play each part?

The hugo star, Asa Butterfield, feels a lot like Charlie. Chloë Grace Moretz would make a great Yvaine, or perhaps Britt Robertson. The Tick-Tocks, they’d be CG, as their faces are masks. I always saw Donnie as a younger version of Tim Roth, but he’s much younger, of course. Maybe Jessica Biel for Aunt Sophie. A lot of the others are character actors. Untimed is really about Charlie and Yvaine first and foremost.

What was the most inspirational book/author you ever read?

So many. Benford’s Great Sky River made me want to integrate computers into our brains (when I applied to med school they disabused me of this notion). My personal philosophy (which is unusual to say the least) is in no short order influenced by hard science fiction. And I wish I was a wizard (but sometimes being a computer programmer or author is close enough). On a more serious note, my extensive history reading gives me broader perspective on novelty and human nature than my less read brethren. Nothing is really new in the world. A friend recently pointed out the rhetorical advice of some self-help guru, which I realized was regurgitated Socratic philosophy.

What are you reading right now?

A bunch of things, mostly non-fiction. William Goldman’s Adventures in the Screen Trade and a book on artisanal cheese making. I pound through stuff fast. Fiction-wise, I need to finish The Akhenaten Adventure by P.B. Kerr, I got to 90% and then put it down because it was paper (I went out of town – which means Kindle only).

What other projects are you currently working on?

Right now, I’m writing two more novels and adapting Untimed into a screenplay. The new books are the Untimed sequel and a totally separate short novel that involves old school fairies and iambic pentameter.

What is something many fans may not know about you?

I’m a ridiculous foodie and wine guy (I blog about it here), to the level of being a certified sommelier and attending 27 course truffle diners. Yet, I also have a secret weakness for “comfort” food (particularly candies) like Skittles and Spicettes.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Untimed is aimed at anyone who likes a rip roaring adventure in the tradition of the great 80s adventure films like Raiders of the Lost Arc. I wanted a lightning paced romp that showed unfamiliar takes on familiar places, times, and people. Charlie is 15, but slightly younger readers will probably appreciate the action, and adult readers enjoy the well thought out time travel system and carefully worked historical implications. Charlie’s voice is frank and compelling, but light hearted with an edge, and I dance across serious themes without getting too heavy. It’s PG-13, no racier than today’s network teen shows.

One of my major agenda’s was to show the past in a fun but accurate manner. History doesn’t have to be boring, and while situations and society changes, people stay the same. People in the past are just as human, but things really have improved in many ways. Charlie, as a contemporary kid, serves as our representative, experiencing different times first hand –up close and personal with chamber pots.

Untimed Book Summary:

Charlie’s the kind of boy that no one notices. Hell, even his own mother can’t remember his name. And girls? The invisible man gets more dates.

As if that weren’t enough, when a mysterious clockwork man tries to kill him in modern day Philadelphia, and they tumble through a hole into 1725 London, Charlie realizes even the laws of time don’t take him seriously.

Still, this isn’t all bad. In fact, there’s this girl, another time traveler, who not only remembers his name, but might even like him! Unfortunately, Yvaine carries more than her share of baggage: like a baby boy and at least two ex-boyfriends! One’s famous, the other’s murderous, and Charlie doesn’t know who is the bigger problem.

When one kills the other — and the other is nineteen year-old Ben Franklin — things get really crazy. Can their relationship survive? Can the future? Charlie and Yvaine are time travelers, they can fix this — theoretically — but the rules are complicated and the stakes are history as we know it. And there's one more wrinkle: he can only travel into the past, and she can only travel into the future!

'Gilded Wings: The Angel Chronicles Book 2' Read Along Book Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for Gilded Wings: The Angel Chronicles, Book 2 by Amy Lignor! Read about Amy's routine and then check out an exclusive excerpt from her book. You can follow the tour to read even more excerpts!

My Writing Routine

I get asked this question by bloggers, readers and more, who want to know what ‘routine’ I go by in order to create a novel. Well, my writing routine is its own kind of unique; all I need is an industrial fan and my dog. I know that sounds a little silly, but there are actual reasons for them both.

Getting the time to write is actually the hardest part of putting together a routine. Some days it feels like I need the whip of Indiana Jones in order to fight so I can sit in front of a computer for more than two minutes. But when I do succeed, I immediately turn on the huge fan that sits in the corner of the office. I lived in a big city for a long time and I’m used to noise. Unfortunately, I only need that noise. If anyone’s speaking - people, the cat, the television, the radio - I can’t write a word. I’m one of the few who actually need to be trapped inside my crazy mind in order to hear all the characters shouting out to me.

Needing the dog would seem to go against the whole ‘quiet’ rule. My dog, however, is a huge, gentle beast who spends most of his time lying beside me unless some type of food has just appeared from the oven. He’s the best editor in the world. I can bounce ideas off him and he looks really interested. His eyes get wide, his ears stand up straight (well…one does) and he cocks his head to the side. Either he really likes the path I’m taking with my characters, or he simply believes that every word in the English language means ‘treat.’

With the exception of the UPS man stopping by with boxes of books to review, the dog and I have a perfect relationship. However, when that brown truck with the horrific brakes that sound like a dolphin being squeezed in the jaws of, well…Jaws, my dog has a tendency to let out a high-pitched bark. If I’m typing when that occurs, whatever I haven’t saved ends up deleted when I fall forward from shock and land on the keyboard.

So…Fan on, check. Hair blowing like I’m caught in a jet engine, check. Reuben, the canine grizzly who is fed, watered, and sleeping soundly just waiting for that one harsh squeak that will allow him to kill me, check.

Then, and only then, can the writing begin.

Until Next Time, Everybody.
Amy

Read the exclusive excerpt:
Gregori grew bored with the conversation and began to babble endlessly about the western half of America. He rambled on about Billy—that kid—and Wyatt Earp, the lawman that Gregori wanted to meet with all his heart.

Mitchell’s smile grew wide as he told Gregori about the time he met a man by the name of Robert Ingersoll during one of his journeys to the West.

“I was building a railroad and we were headed to a small town by the name of Roswell, New Mexico. It’s far away from here, but a busy little town to say the least. On the train, Governor Lew Wallace sat next to me. You won’t know of him, seeing as that you just arrived, but he was the Governor of New Mexico at the time, Gregori. It was back...mercy...almost fifteen years ago now, when Max was just a little boy. You hadn’t even arrived yet, Myles.”

The boy giggled when his father tickled his side. “Tell us more! Was Billy the Kid there?”

Mitchell’s face changed, as if he was going back in time to sit on that train once more. “No. Actually, Ingersoll talked about religion the whole trip. He didn’t believe that a world full of sadness and despair could’ve been created by an entity who supposedly loved us all so much. He didn’t believe in eternal punishments; said there was no sin a man could commit that would be bad enough to make him live in eternal peril.”

Drew stared at him in fascination. “Did you correct him?”

“No. After all,” Mitchell said, turning to Anya with a smile. “Freedom is what this country was founded on. No one should be persecuted for what they believe in, or don’t believe in.”

Anya shook her head in wonder. “I am from a place, as Drew is, that understands there’s only one thing to believe. We do not have the freedom to speak of any other belief than the one that’s been with us for centuries. These beliefs are a part of us. They are worth fighting and dying for in our countries.”

Drew nodded from across the table as Mitchell sat back in his chair.

Anya searched for the right words so as not to offend the generous man at the head of the table. “But I agree with you that no one should be told what to believe, Mr. Carrow.”

“Mitchell,” he said, offering a warm smile.

“Sir,” she nodded. “But if you’re not willing to stand up for what you believe in, then what does America have?”

“I don’t understand,” Mitchell said, leaning his elbows on the table.

“Well, people can be allowed to search for something, but if they never find anything to believe in, I think that would be much worse. Some people do need guidance in these areas or they will grow up without hope and faith. Can you imagine what a generation like that would do?” Anya felt a shock go through her system, as if the strange light bulb above her head had sent electricity through her veins. “I believe that’s when men would start to think they were God, instead of listening to the One who truly is.”

“Well said,” Drew replied softly; he suddenly looked as if he was desperate to jump across the linen tablecloth, fall to his knees and ask Anya to believe in him for the rest of her life.

Mitchell sat back and smiled. “Yes, well said. But it’s a gray area, which,” he continued, turning back to the confused face of Gregori, “is the point of my story. Lew Wallace, the Governor of New Mexico, took this man’s words to heart and eventually wrote a book called Ben Hur. Some people hated it—some loved it, but the best thing that came out of it was that everyone was once again talking about the subject of faith. That, to me, is an amazing feat. Think about it. Pages of well-thought out words can bring together a whole country. They move the focus away from politics, business and money, to talk about a subject that we sometimes forget is there—where we came from and who’s watching over us.”

Anya was a little surprised at the serious tone of the conversation.

'Blissful Lies' Blog Tour & Review

Blissful Lies Book Summary:

Things are often not what they seem in the decadent lifestyles of the rich and famous. Life can be messy and at times people do what feels wrong, because in the end it may turn out to be the best decision ever made. A close bond between 5 lifelong friends, now of college age, find the limits of their relationships are tested when multiple secrets and lies begin to surface, which ultimately leave them wondering if it is all too much to move forward as the family they once were. Forbidden love, drug dealing, date rape, betrayal, cheating, and more begin to unravel the strong ties between friends. Can they overcome secrets which warrant a very difficult life altering response?

**My thoughts**

When I heard that this book was being made into a movie, I have to say I wasn't surprised. The plot reads more like a movie or a soap opera than a book to me. Lots of lies and deceit, illicit affairs, and twists in the plot lend themselves to a story unfolding on screen.

I was reminded of several other movies while reading this novel. I thought of The Graduate, with the affair between an older woman and her son's best friend. (Hello, Mrs. Robinson.) Secrets between friends who go away on a trip reminded me of I Know What You Did Last Summer. (I could see Jennifer Love Hewitt as one of the women, standing out in the rain, yelling to come and get her.)

I have to say that some of the plot twists were really easy for me to figure out at an early stage. I kept on reading to find out if I was right. Some of the other plot twists seemed to come out of left field. This falls in line with the soap opera kind of idea, where even though people have known each other forever. strange things happen and deception rules.

If you're a fan of soap operas and drama, you're going to really like this book. I wish Jennifer Brown-Thomas good luck on her movie adventure and future projects!

“No! Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Hide your emotions!”

A mischievous smirk spread across his lips. “Why not?”

Iris wanted to take back what she had said and ask him about the ‘big thing’ he wanted to tell her, but she was concentrating too hard on trying not to smile in response to his smirk.

“At least you don’t already think I am a freak for having something big to tell you. I was worried I might scare you away,” he said.

Iris was struck by the fact that he admitted to being scared. It didn’t seem like something the men she had read about in books would say. But somehow, Falcon had the gift of being masculine and innocent all at the same time. It was an odd combination.

“I already know there are a lot of ‘big things’ I have been left in the dark on. Dad will be coming here soon to explain them to me but...there is one thing that bothers me more than anything else,” she said, following him through the trees.

“What?”

“What color was my mother’s hair? Do I look like her?”

“You really don’t remember?”

“No. I really don’t. I don’t even remember my own mother. What kind of girl can forget her mother? Her face, her smell...anything. I would settle for remembering anything right now.”

He paced for a few moments and finally looked up. “Follow me.”

 **My thoughts**

In a world inundated with paranormal adventures, this book took me a bit by surprise. Sure, there is still a battle between good and evil. The main character is on a quest to find out the truth about her life, because essentially she has been living a lie. But there are no vampires, weres, etc. This story is different by being about a girl whose soul is half bird. It sounds strange, but the author makes it work. It doesn't read the same way as traditional paranormal books.

The story goes by quickly, as does the information and the action in the book. It feels confusing at times, like a lot of information is being thrown at you, while at the same time so much is missing. I think that may be a way to help the reader connect with Iris. She is being bombarded with all of this information, which is getting sorted out among all of the misinformation of her life. She doesn't know whom to trust and is swirling in a whirpool of emotions. Nevertheless, you are rooting for her to find her true self. And her story is just beginning.

I received a copy of this book from Tribute Books, in exchange for my honest review as a part of this tour.

"The First Iris Drawing" Guest Post by Emma Michaels

Today, I would like to welcome author Emma Michaels as a stop on her Tribute Books Tour for Owlet: Society of Feather #1.

The First Iris Drawing

While I did many different pencil sketches, the first true drawing of Iris, back when her name was still Serenity (and she still had long, dark hair), was done when I was nineteen. It wasn’t my best sketch, and it was done rather quickly, but it has always stayed with me. Even through numerous moves I managed to keep this sketch, and it has served as inspiration for me during the evolution that Owlet has gone through.

The sketch portrays the strange, wide-eyed girl that continues to fascinate me. I have watched her dream, face hardships and be forced to discover the truth about her life when no one would help her. I’ve been right there along with her when she has experienced tragedy and I feel that I have learned as much about her through my drawings as I have writing about the world that she lives in.

While over the years the way I have seen Iris has changed, originally she loved dresses with jeans and had a face that might have come out of one of the old portraits when eyes were wide and cheeks were thinner. In the picture, she has one foot in the ocean and is sitting on a piece of drift wood on the island that became her Never-Never. I framed the image with briar thorns and ivy that I had always imagined growing along the side of the house from her dreams.

For me, drawing has always been a big part of my life and served to not only inspire me, but to help bring to life my stories. While I would write, I would also draw. I saw the worlds I visited in writing come alive through my drawings. Although Iris has undergone many changes in her evolution, she continues to inspire me in my writing to this day.

New York City, 1943. War is raging in Europe and the Pacific, while Jack Dalton is stuck attending Dutch Masters Day School. What Jack really wants is to enlist in the army, to fight...

Everything changes when Coco, Jack's "fiancee," throws him over for one of his classmates. Jack sees red and does something drastic. Then he runs away. Hiding out in a nearby park, Jack joins ranks with a group of vagrants and is soon under the sway of a man called the Leader, an ex-convict who is as articulate and charismatic as he is dangerous. The Leader turns Jack's world upside down. To put things right, Jack must prove himself a braver soldier than he ever imagined.

**My thoughts**

Back to Bataan is a different kind of young adult book, at least for more modern literature. It is reminiscent of older classics by authors such as Hemingway and Salinger. The characters are more mature than one would expect 11 year-olds to be. They are deeper thinkers who are more concerned with world problems and the effects of those on their personal lives than shallow current trends. You can read this book quickly, but you are forced to stop and think more about what is being said than you do when perusing the contemporary trendy books about vampires.

I think to fully appreciate this book, readers will want to brush up on their history. Learn more about Bataan and the horrors of the Nazi regime. Read about how families at home struggled during the war, even here in America. Why is it so difficult for them to find proper food? Why is it so bad that Hans is suspected of being a Nazi? What are Jack's stories really trying to tell us? There's more going on here than meets the eye.

The Color of Snow Book Tour and Review

The Color of Snow

Book Blurb:

Can a troubled young girl reenter society after living in isolation?

When a beautiful 16-year-old girl named Sophie is found sequestered in a cage-like room in a rundown house in the desolate hills of Arbon Valley, Idaho, the entire community is shocked to learn she is the legendary Callidora--a baby girl who was kidnapped from her crib almost seventeen years ago and canonized in missing posters with portraits of what the fabled girl might resemble. Authorities soon learn that the cage was there to protect people from Sophie, because her biological father believes she is cursed.

Sophie is discovered after the man she knows as Papa, shoots and injures Damien, a young man who is trying to rescue her. Now, unsocialized and thrust into the world, and into a family she has never met, Sophie must decide whether she should accept her Papa’s claims that she is cursed and he was only trying to protect others, or trust the new people in her life who have their own agendas. Guided by a wise cousin, Sophie realizes that her most heartbreaking challenge is to decide if her love for Damien will destroy him like her Papa claims, or free her from past demons that haunt her mind.

My thoughts:
Sophie's story is a tough one to read. She suffers from what is called "Stockholm Syndrome." Yes, she should love her father, but what he has done to her is unforgivable. She doesn't know any better, though, and is quick to defend him. At the same time, she is torn because she senses something isn't right. She deserves love but is brainwashed to think otherwise. She doesn't understand that people can love her. She doesn't understand what a normal teen's life is like. She has no idea what beauty is. I think one of the most heartwrenching parts is when her cousin finds a self-portrait that Sophie drew. It is all distorted, because the only reflection of herself she has ever seen is the one in the toaster. You just want to reach in and beat the man she calls "Papa." The more you get to know, though, you also start to feel a little sorry for him. It's heartbreaking.

Living with her grandparents, it is like the cycle begins all over again, only by different means and from multiple directions. Thank God for her cousin Stephanie, who is the source of truth and light in her life now.

Three stories are being told at the same time. One is present-day, told by Sophie in the first person, as she gets used to her new life with her family and away from Papa. A second one is set a few years before, also told by Sophie, about her growing relationship with Damien. The third is told in third-person about a man named Luke and the love of his life, Vee. Their story is also a tragic one. At first, when the story shifts to this first flashback about Luke, you're thrown off for a bit. As the book progresses, you begin to see how the stories eventually merge together.

What is frightening about this story is how plausible it could be. Think of the high profile kidnapping cases we have seen over the last several years. It doesn't even have to be a kidnapping case for some girls to be abused in this way. It's really sad, and unfortunately, that is what makes it so intriguing to read. I felt protective of Sophie, just like I would for any of my own "kids."

'Knee Deep' Blog Tour - Review

Knee Deep

Summary

Shawn is the guy Ronnie Bird promised her life to at the age of fourteen. He's her soul mate. He's more uptight every day, but it's not his fault. His family life is stressful, and she's adding to it. She just needs to be more understanding, and he'll start to be the boy she fell in love with. She won’t give up on someone she’s loved for so long.

Luke is her best friend, and the guy she hangs with to watch girlie movies in her large blanketopias. He's the guy she can confide in before she even goes to her girlfriends, and the guy who she's playing opposite in Romeo and Juliet. Now her chest flutters every time he gets too close. This is new. Is Ronnie falling for him? Or is Juliet? The lines are getting blurry, but leaving one guy for another is not something that a girl like Ronnie does.

Shawn’s outbursts are starting to give her bruises, and Luke’s heart breaks as Ronnie remains torn. While her thoughts and feelings swirl around the lines between friendship and forever, she’s about to lose them both.

My Thoughts:

This is the kind of book that all teenage girls need to read. Even grown up girls need to have a reminder to stay true to themselves. Don't let a man hurt you, ever. It's not okay, no matter how much he says he is sorry.

Most of us have known someone like Ronnie. Their stories may not have been exactly the same. Maybe the bruises were more emotional than physical. The denial and excuses are always the same, as is the devastation that occurs. Perhaps you have even been Ronnie on some level in a relationship. Her story is familiar and painful to read. The whole time you just want to reach in and shake her for sticking with Shawn and not seeing what she can have with Luke. She is so fortunate to have the friends and family that she does.

This book is an emotional one. I actually cried toward the end of it. I was also choked up at one point when Ronnie's father, who is a therapist, says something along the lines of, "This is my job. This is what I do. And even I didn't realize what was going on." The sad thing is, we can miss it when we are too close to the situation.

Yes, this is a story that has been told time and time again. But it is different this time, because it is Ronnie's story. And it needed to be told.
