"What Does Your Office Look Like?" Guest Post by Julian Rosado-Machain, author of 'Guardians Inc: The Cypher'

Welcome to the virtual book tour for Guardians, Inc: The Cypher by Julian Rosado-Machain. I let him take over the blog today, to tell us more about his office space. What does your work space look like?

What Does Your Office Look Like
I am sorry to say that my office is a mess... at least to the untrained eye, there's old papers sitting atop clips that are holding invoices for services I requested a month ago. A black pen with blue ink is exactly behind the right computer speaker and an orange pen with black ink is in the holder beside my wife's picture.
Bobba Fett dangles his head from the right edge of the monitor, he's the man against the man, the revolutionary I keep close at hand when I get chastised by the boss. A little flick on his forehead and Bobba Fett lets the boss man know who's the meanest, baddest bounty hunter in the galaxy. He does what I can't do with a suave cadence of the head, "Yeah... whatever" he seems to say.
I don't really open the first drawer since I saw a little spider web there...It was one of those semi microscopic, teeny, weenie translucent spiders that appear once in a while in the strangest of places. I'm not scared by it. I just forgot what's inside the drawer in the first place, so why open it and brave a possible spider horde?
Push pins litter the second drawer, their points glittering each time I open it to get a wrench or a screwdriver, they are both menacing and comforting and they have given me the pleasure(twice) to prick the palm of a co-worker that tried to find something in my second drawer that only should be used by yours truly.
The third drawer hold assorted tools and consumables for those tools. From staples, to a (gasp) pre iphone calculator. It used to contain rubber bands too, but they became blaster shots for my finger-gun against Bobba Fett. He won by default because I ran out of ammo.
I am not a hoarder, or a disorganized person either. I know where everything is. If you ask me for the thermocoupler that the low boy in the kitchen needs to keep the pilot turned on, I will (with my eyes closed, mind you) extend my hand and open the fourth drawer on the left and find... a rubber band!
The war is not lost!
Long live the fighters!

'Miss Fortune Cookie' Book Tour

Scan-1-1-2

Miss Fortune Cookie

Meet Erin. Smart student, great daughter, better friend. Secretly the mastermind behind the popular advice blog Miss Fortune Cookie. Totally unaware that her carefully constructed life is about to get crazy.

It all begins when her ex-best friend sends a letter to her blog— and then acts on her advice. Erin’s efforts to undo the mess will plunge her into adventure, minor felonies, and possibly her very first romance.

What’s a likely fortune for someone no longer completely in control of her fate? Hopefully nothing like: You will become a crispy noodle in the salad of life.

**My thoughts**

This is another one of those young adult books that I would have eaten up when I was in middle school and high school. I fell in love with Erin from almost the very beginning. I like how she is an Irish girl trying to fit into the Asian culture, after growing up in China. I especially love her alter ego as Miss Fortune Cookie, and how she uses those fortunes in her advice column.

A lot of the struggles she and her friends face are common to teens today. There's the stress of picking a college, plus pleasing parents, balancing friendships, and finding young love.

It was a fun read and I look forward to reading more from this author!

BLURB:

that coexists alongside with the Earth.

Lara Grover never listened to her elders, so warnings like “do not talk to strangers” mean nothing to her. When a boy from an unknown world saves her from an avalanche with the aid of a snow dragon, Lara is not stunned in the least. Instead, she joins Peter on his quest to help him realize the purpose behind his arrival to Transadonia.

Together, Lara and Peter embark on an adventure filled with perils, trickery, betrayals, and unexpected alliances.

Check out this exclusive excerpt!
“Master Auberon agreed to see you.” Naum opened the heavy wooden door that separated the antechamber from the rest of the house. “Prove to him your courage, and he will not refuse you,” the bear whispered to the children before ushering them into the vast hall. “I will leave you now,” said Naum humbly to the Bear Charmer and exited the room.
The Bear Charmer had lived so long among bears that he had begun to resemble one himself. He sat on a massive, coarsely-built wooden throne. His face was haggard with years of life in the wilderness. His dark eyes were deep set, expressionless, and, like a bear’s, impossible to read. He wore clothes made of deer hides, and in his hand he held a wooden scepter. It was just a rough, wooden stick, but to the bears it signified power and respect. He looked at Peter and Lara dispassionately as they approached his chair. When they were close enough, the Bear Charmer began to speak.
“You are the first human visitors to enter the bear fort. Because you have saved one of my best bears, I am willing to hear your story. But I warn you, I have no tolerance for lies.”
“We come to ask you for help, Master Auberon,” said Peter in a firm and steady voice. Although the Bear Charmer’s cold impassive stare made him uncomfortable, he did his best not to show it. Instead, he concentrated on the purpose of their visit and blocked everything else out of his mind, thinking of Naum’s parting words of encouragement.
“Is that why you helped Naum?” the Bear Charmer’s voice was deep and rough, like a bear’s growl. Through the small open windows of the hall, the bears could be seen shifting in agitation, ready to come to the defense of their ruler at any moment. Even though they could have easily torn the human they had accepted as their master into shreds, they obeyed and listened to his every word because he had turned them from mindless beasts into skillful workers.
“No, Master Auberon; that is not the reason. When we saw Naum trapped in the pit, we helped him because it is not right to leave someone suffering, especially if it is within your ability to help. And he was gracious enough to walk us to your fort. We hope that you will agree to help us.”
The Bear Charmer rose from his throne and approached the children. He walked with great strides, leaning forward heavily with his arms swinging by his sides, and at times it seemed as though he would lean on them, as a bear leans on his front paws. He stood next to Peter; close enough for Peter to hear his measured, calm breath, burrowing into him with his piercing stare, searching for any hint of fear or lies.
“What is it that you need help with?”
“We need your help to rescue Lara’s cousin, Ethan, who was kidnapped by the forest witch, Ramona,” replied Peter in what he hoped was an even voice.
“And what does that have to do with my bears or me?”
“It doesn’t. Not exactly, but Peter’s quest does,” Lara cut in before Peter could speak. “You see, Peter was going to see the Chancellor and that was when he met me – he saved me from an avalanche, and I persuaded him to let me join his journey. Thinking back, I caused him more trouble than good, but he never said a word about it. You see, that’s the kind of person Peter is – he never complains and he always helps those in need of help...”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Dear Reader,

Thank you very much for joining me for Over the Mountain and Back blog tour. The story of Over the Mountain and Back began over twenty years ago when I was fourteen years old and decided to write a novel as an anniversary gift for my parents. It was going to be a fantasy adventure about a boy named Peter and a girl named Lara set in a magical country, Transadonia. I remember writing studiously on the pages of an ornate notebook I had acquired especially for the occasion. Back then computers were not yet widely used, so I had to pay extra care to my handwriting. A year later, Over the Mountain and Back was completed, or at least I had thought so at the time. Needless to say my parents were very surprised with their anniversary gift.

Years passed; I finished high school and went on to college. Lara’s and Peter’s story faded from my mind, replaced by the hustles and bustles of everyday life. Then, one day – the day that happened to be my thirtieth birthday, my parents presented me with a gift: it was oblong in shape and wrapped in shiny paper. After I opened the wrapping, I was stunned to find the long forgotten story I had written all those years ago.

Long story short, after two years of extensive work, I rewrote and expanded Over the Mountain and Back into a novel of 95,000 words. For me it had been an exciting journey to be reunited with my old friends: Lara and Peter, Forest Witch Ramona, Chancellor Libra, Bookbrownies, and, of course, Carnelion, among the many others.

I hope that you will join Lara and Peter on their adventure in Transadonia.

"Your shirt is yellow."

"Your eyes are blue."

"You have to stop running away from your problems."

"You're too skinny."

Fifteen-year-old Diana Keller accidentally begins teaching The Obvious Game to new kid Jesse on his sixteenth birthday. As their relationship deepens, Diana avoids Jesse's past with her own secrets -- which she'll protect at any cost.

“Everyone trusted me back then. Good old, dependable Diana. Which is why most people didn’t notice at first.”

Praise for The Obvious Game:

“I couldn’t put down The Obvious Game. Arens perfectly captures the hunger, pain and uncertainty of adolescence.” -- Ann Napolitano, author of A GOOD HARD LOOK and WITHIN ARM'S REACH

"THE OBVIOUS GAME is a fearless, honest, and intense look into the psychology of anorexia. The characters—especially Diana--are so natural and emotionally authentic that you’ll find yourself yelling at the page even as you’re compelled to turn it." -- Coert Voorhees, author of LUCKY FOOLS and THE BROTHERS TORRES

"Let’s be clear about one thing: there’s nothing obvious about The Obvious Game. Arens has written a moving, sometimes heart-breaking story about one girl’s attempt to control the uncontrollable. You can’t help but relate to Diana and her struggles as you delve into this gem of a novel." -- Risa Green, author of THE SECRET SOCIETY OF THE PINK CRYSTAL BALL

I’ve been writing since first setting pencil to steno pad at age 8. A year later, I began developing the world of my current series-in-progress, and even created its title, The Silver Sphere. Now, with the support of years of experience, those early maps and back stories have progressed into what I hope is a fresh and entertaining take on the classic young adult fantasy adventure.
Despite my frequent escapes into parallel worlds, I root myself firmly in my very real family and community. When not pacing the yard maniacally after every few pages of writing, I spend as much time as possible hanging out with my studly 9-year-old son, and my inspirational wife Jenna. I also coach several local youth sports teams in Beverly Hills, and alternate between yelling at my two crazy Corgis and hiking with my trained German Shepherd.
For more, join me in my favorite fantasy worlds, from Lord of the Rings to the creations of C.S. Lewis, Anne McCaffrey and Terry Brooks. Even more importantly, stop by and say hello on my Facebook page at AuthorMichaelDadich, tweet me at @MichaelDadich, and stalk my website athttp://www.thesilversphere.org.

"The Beginning" Guest Post by Katie Gallagher, Author of 'Catching You'

The Beginning
By
Katie Gallagher

I began writing my novel, Catching You, in November 2008 for NaNowrimo, a month long competition to write a 50k novel. My husband was in the Army at the time and we were living in Junction City, K. He was stationed at Fort Riley.

I spent most of my day cleaning the house, watching TV, and of course, writing. I wrote in our guest room that only had an air mattress and a desk with our computer on it. It was a far cry from my dream office, but it did the job. I would begin writing in the morning after my husband left for the day and stop about 3’oclock in the afternoon right before he came home. I’d take a break for lunch, but even while I was downstairs, my notebook wasn’t far away just in case the muse spoke to me.

I had the Winamp cued up with a playlist of songs that ranged anywhere from Taylor Swift to Nickelback and even Evanescence. Since I’m what you would call a caffeine addict, I usually had a Mountain Dew or Pepsi with me on the desk while being careful not to spill it on the keyboard. Not all of that time was spent writing though. I’d also surf the internet, i.e.: Facebook, and other writing websites. At first, I just wanted to win NaNowrimo, but pretty soon I began really enjoying myself.

I began to see it as movie scenes and it became easier and easier to write. First it was I Know What You did Last Summer and finally it melted into something along the lines of an episode of Pretty Little Liars. Who killed Ryan Carmichael?

I sent it off to a few agents, but didn’t get any responses. Finally, at the urging of my friend and fellow author, Breanne Rowe, now Breanne Best, writing under the pseudonym J. S, Chancellor, I sat down and began to edit it again. That’s when I figured out that I couldn’t do it by myself. Breanne knew someone who would edit it for cheap and I sent them an email.

That was August 2011 and a month later she had it done. After I finished those edits, I felt like it still wasn’t finished. So, I sent it off to my friend Megan to look over. We emailed back and forth for a few months, meeting every once in a while for coffee to talk. I had a personal goal to finish it in February, but I didn’t make it. Finally, this past June, I decided that it was finally good enough to send to a publisher. So, I sent it off to three different publishers on a whim and just waited. I got the good news that I was part of the Lazy Day team three weeks later.

This was supposed to be the best summer of Lauren’s life. It turns out to be the worst.

After Lauren wakes up in the hospital and learns that her boyfriend Ryan has died, her life slowly begins to unravel. She soon begins receiving mysterious text messages that make her wonder if his death was even an accident like everyone is saying. She starts confiding in her best friend, Bryn, until she remembers something about the accident that makes her wonder if she’s trusted the wrong person the entire time. She’s determined to get justice for Ryan, but can she do it without losing her best friends?

Read an excerpt:
“Go away!” I yelled. The knock came again. Whoever it was wasn’t listening. The door opened and Elisabeth stood in the doorway. She was wearing pink sweatpants with Aero on the butt, a white, short sleeved t-shirt that said “This one time at band camp…” and pink flip flops. She had her dark brown hair thrown in a messy ponytail and it looked like it hadn’t been washed since yesterday.
“Oh hey, how’d you get in here? Visiting hours aren’t until 11:00 am, it’s only 9:30,” I said, glancing up at the clock.
“I told the nurse I was your sister,” she replied.
“That’s priceless.” I smiled. She didn’t smile back. She looked down at her nails and began picking at her manicure.
“You can come closer. I’m not contagious,” I said, trying to lighten the mood.
She began bouncing from one foot to another. “I’m sorry to hear about Ryan.”
“Thanks.” I glanced over at Elisabeth; she’d moved further into the room, but was still keeping her distance.
“That’s better,” I said. She smiled sadly.
“So, what’s going on?”  I asked.
“Nothing. I heard about the accident and wanted to come visit you. I had to make sure you were all right. After hearing that Ryan died, I was scared. They told me that you were okay, but I had to see for myself.”
“Thanks. Physically I’m all right, except the ribs, but mentally may take a while. I can tell that something else is wrong, now spill it,” I joked.
“Um, Ryan told me he broke up with you. Is it true?”
“Yeah, he did.” I frowned. “How did you know that? It just happened yesterday after graduation.”
Elisabeth was quiet for a moment. “That’s what we were talking about afterwards. I saw you looking over at us. I’m the reason, Lauren”
I stuttered, “Wha…What do you mean you’re the reason?”
“I’m the reason you two broke up. Ryan and I were seeing each other. We have been for a while now.. I told him I wasn’t going to continue sneaking around behind your back.” She paused. “It was either you or me. He couldn’t have both anymore.”
She continued talking, but I stopped listening. I couldn’t take this right now. I felt sick to my stomach. I leaned down, grabbed the basin the nurse left earlier and took a deep breath waiting for the nausea to pass. It didn’t.
A few minutes later, I threw up everything that I’d eaten the day before and my chest felt like it was on fire. Elisabeth came over, “Are you okay? Do you want me to get the doctor?” she asked quietly.
I shook my head. “ No. I just want you to leave.”
“Lauren, about what I said…” Her words trail off.
“Get out!”  I yelled. Elisabeth just stood there. “I said get out!” I repeated.
            “I’m sorry,” she said.
“Yeah, I am, too,” I said voice muffled into my pillow. I turned away hoping she’d get the hint.  I waited until I heard retreating footsteps to look and see if she was gone.
I couldn’t believe I heard her right… she and Ryan had been “seeing” each other behind my back. My best friend, my boyfriend.  I thought he loved me.

BIO:

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognize that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practice given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each other's loves – it works wonderfully…

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.
