Fate of Dragons
(Dragons Rising #1)
By Alisha Klapheke
YA Fantasy, Romance
Paperback & ebook, 292 Pages
March 27th 2019

An Earth Queen desperate to wake her magic.

An elven prince fighting a ruthless betrayal.

A flood is coming. The Sea Queen has a mad plan to drown the world. Only the magic of the Earth Queen can stop her. Vahly, the last human, was born to fill that role and wield the power necessary to battle the rising oceans and save the dragons and elves.

But Vahly is the world’s biggest disappointment. She possesses no magic whatsoever.

When she finds an ancient scroll that mentions a human power ritual conducted deep in the homeland of the elves, she gathers her dragon allies and journeys to see the king of that great forest-dwelling race.

Welcomed by a handsome royal cloaked in dark magic, will Vahly find answers or will a twisted and powerful elven lord destroy her chance at saving the world?

Excerpt

There, on the ground, was a shape that was not rock or smoke or golden earthblood.

Or dragon.

Her lips parted in a silent gasp.

Two arms. Two legs. Supple flesh instead of scales.

Crouching by the body, Vahly moved a curtain of obsidian hair away from the creature’s face.

A pointed ear.

Vahly’s tongue didn’t want to work.

It was an elf.

She shook him hard, finally forcing her mouth to make sounds. “Wake up, fool! You’re going to die out here and I’m not about to go down with you. I thought your kynd was known for wisdom. Why in the world are you out here by yourself?”

He could have asked her the same thing.

The elf was nothing like she’d imagined. Yes, he had the glowing elegance of the illustrations she’d seen from the library scrolls. His exposed arms showed powerful muscles and his features were just as chiseled as recorded in dragon history.

But there was an age to him, a feeling of having weathered many storms, a burnished look to his fine, clear skin and proud, beardless chin. His presence weighed on her like a winter cloak, heavy but somehow comforting.

A line between his sharply slanted eyebrows made her think he had experienced great frustration in his lifetime. She hadn’t thought to see that in an elf. This wasn’t the picture she’d cobbled from her research.

He was so much … more.

Inside the castle in a room far away from the exit, the pack of wolves watched the group with hunger in their eyes. Ionan looked around nervously, eyeing the clothes that were scattered along the floor.
“The big one’s a Changer,” a large black male whispered to a silver colored female at his side.
“So he is,” the female replied, licking her paw clean. “I’ve never had Changer before.”
“Wonderful catch, Carmilla. I knew we could count on you for dinner,” a white and black female said softly, wagging her tail.
“It was nothing Iris,” Carmilla responded proudly.
“Darling, why don’t you ever call me Mother anymore? It breaks my heart,” Iris said with a voice that was sickly sweet.
“You may have made me, Iris, but you will never be my mother,” Carmilla said, eyeing Kia.
“What’s going on here?” Kia asked, her voice cracking nervously.
The wolves around them snickered as the head female grinned. “I’m surprised you haven’t figured it out yet,” Iris said, snatching a purple velvet dress from the floor and throwing it into air.
Her body twisted and contorted into that of a human and the dress slipped easily over her head as she transformed. Her hair was black with streaks of white running through it, her eyes a sharp gold color. “We’re the predators and you’re the prey,” she smiled.
“Wait, you’re…” Kia choked on her own words.
“Ortusans,” Iris said, her voice dripping with poison. The group watched in horror as the twenty or so wolves changed, tossing on their clothes as easily as Iris and staring at the group eagerly.
The Ortusan called Iris smiled at them devilishly. “Get them.”

Read an excerpt from 'The Moorigad Dragon' by Debra Kristi

moorigad tour banner

moorigad the dragonA Magical Universe… Hidden throughout the worlds are magical portals leading to the secret dimension where Mystic’s Carnival is nestled. A self-aware fair that is both carnival and circus combined, and filled with a plethora of supernatural and paranormal beings.

Performers and runaways, Kyra and Sebastian, are away visiting the human realm when they find themselves at odds. Stay hidden, or interfere with a human’s destiny?

Saving a life doesn’t go unpunished.

Kyra thinks saving Marcus’s life is easy – slick as dragon snot – and a one-time deal. The resulting bond tying her to him and enslaving her as protector is unexpected.

She didn’t expect one good deed to turn into an endless chain of good deeds. Or to complicate the relationship with her best friend, Sebastian. And she especially didn’t expect it to place her life on the line.

Kyra’s dragon must keep Marcus alive and salvage her relationship with Sebastian without losing herself or dying.

Read an excerpt:
Kyra released Chelsea and ran, ran hard. Adrenaline pumping in a ka-thump whoosh, repeat. With each stride closer, more ash, more debris showered upon her. Something fluttered up against her. She grabbed it, its edges still glowing. It was a partially burnt card.
An instant light explosion—recognition. A tarot card.
She flipped it over.
No!
A dancing skeleton stared up at her. Death. So similar to the one she’d returned to Sebastian.
Maybe the very same one. Sebastian had gone back to work. He should be safe. But then why was his card fluttering into her hand?
Bolting into the clearing, she cursed the drag pulling her to Marcus again. She needed to get to him. Had to protect him.
The trailers scattered out before her in no particular pattern. A few remained untouched by the flames, but the majority burned, each engulfed at varied degrees. Her friends, her family—so many in danger!
“Marcus!” The roar of Kyra’s beast crept into her scream with a fever pitch. Called by the fire, her dragon clawed to the surface, edged into her features.

'Aranya (Shapeshifter Dragons Book #1)' by Marc Secchia

Blurb:

Chained to a rock and tossed off a cliff by her boyfriend, Aranya is executed for high treason against the Sylakian Empire. Falling a league into the deadly Cloudlands is not a fate she ever envisaged. But what if she did not die? What if she could spread her wings and fly?

Long ago, Dragons ruled the Island-World above the Cloudlands. But their Human slaves cast off the chains of Dragonish tyranny. Humans spread across the Islands in their flying Dragonships, colonising, building and warring. Now, the all-conquering Sylakians have defeated the last bastion of freedom–the Island-Kingdom of Immadia.

Evil has a new enemy. Aranya, Princess of Immadia. Dragon Shapeshifter.

Read an excerpt:
She turned to face the Last Walk.
Yolathion put his hand on her shoulder. At the end of the walkway, Aranya saw a block of stone with a chain attached to it. They really wanted to be sure she’d drop straight into the Cloudlands, she thought. The old stories still held weight. No graceful dive off the edge for her. No enchantress transforming herself into a bird and flying away.
It should have been called the longest walk.
Ten Crimson Hammers processed with her and Yolathion. Perhaps they thought she’d make a break for the rajal pit. Her feet brought her alongside the block of stone. Her body and her mind seemed to belong on different Islands.
Yolathion knelt, clearly in some discomfort, to fit the manacle depending from the stone about her ankles, locking them together. “I’m sorry, Aranya,” he said, unexpectedly.
“Me too. I think I could have loved you, Yolathion. But your loyalty and your heart lie with Sylakia. I could never love that.”
Her words hurt him; she read it in his eyes. Just another regret she would shortly leave behind.
Yolathion lifted her in his arms. Two of his fellows hefted the block.
“On the count of three,” he said. “One … two … three.”
He tossed Aranya over the edge.

Read an excerpt:
Nothing should force a woman to choose between the happiness of the man she loves and the safety of their child. The mother's shoulders shook with silent sobs as she bent over the baby carrier and gazed at her sleeping daughter. The tiny girl already shared her mother's beautty. Reaching in carefully, she stroked her cheek, but made sure no sound disturbed her infant's sleep.
The car seat sat on a round, marble topped table, entered in the large entrance of a magnificent home. Behind the table, a wide staircase curved gracefully up to the next floor. On the landing above hung a large wedding picture of the gorgeous mother with a handsome man looking down at her. Obviously in love, the couple's expressions reflected the joy of their special day. The tragic expression the woman wore now contrasted sharply with the happiness from the past.
She imagined no peace for either her nor her husband after what she needed to do -- had to do -- for the greater good. But she clung to the comfort of knowing he also wanted the best -- for their daughter and others like them. Picking up the carrier in one hand and throwing a generously stuffed bag over her other shoulder, the mother paused one last moment to look around. As she walked out of the home's large double doors, she knew she would never see this place again. She walked down the wide stairs to her waiting vehicle. After securing her precious cargo in the back seat, the grieving mother got in the car and drove off.
Though she saw many things clearly, the fleeing woman did not know if she would have a chance to explain. She could not see that part of the future. So with tears still spilling down her cheeks, she clutched at her necklace. It held three beautiful charms sparkling with precious rubies.
She gripped them in the palm of her hand for a long moment, thinking of how her husband fulfilled every one of her heart's desires from the moment they met. One day, she hoped he would understand her drastic actions. Then she tucked her necklace back into her shirt, determined to do what she must.
Darkness threatened all their kind and their way of life. She hated sacrificing her and her husband's futures, but what she planned to do held the only hope. Hanging on to her courage, she pushed harder on the gas pedal and sped into the night.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ronda White experienced a very multicultural upbringing—born in Bangladesh where she lived most of the time until turning eleven, then two years in India where she spent three semesters in boarding school, and graduating high school in Brussels, Belgium where she spent four years and enjoyed traveling around Europe. She attended college in the U.S., where she lived periodically throughout her first seventeen years.

After graduating with an English Education degree, she spent two years in Liberia, West Africa where she had the privilege of teaching a very diverse group of students—American, Argentinian, Canadian, Dutch, Ethiopian, Filipino, German, Korean, Lebanese, Liberian, and Scandinavian. Her time there was cut short with the onset of a civil war that forced the school to shut down and her and her students to be evacuated. She is still in contact with many of these former students.

After some further education, she taught school for eleven years in a Southwest Missouri city. Transferring to a much smaller community, she taught five more years before resigning from teaching. Now she is pursuing a career she dreamed of doing since ninth grade—being a writer. Ronda lives with her husband, kids, and dog in a small town in Missouri.
