When Salem attempts to outrun the menacing demons, he develops superhuman abilities, leaving him with even more questions. Looking for an escape from the mental and physical torture, he becomes fixated on an irresistible new girl at school, Lily. As Salem focuses his attention on Lily, everything around him devolves into chaos, including his relationship with Sarah.
What he soon finds is the relentless pursuits by demons and his superhuman abilities are triggered by the same source—life threatening family secrets. Just when he thinks his family and friends are not who he thought they were, he discovers he's not who he thought he was either—and that he is the most hunted teenager on the planet. And he has just been found.
Read an excerpt:
Salem suddenly felt something hit his back. His face hit the graveled dirt.“So, you’re Salem huh? You were the chosen one. Too bad your destiny is to die insignificantly.”Salem couldn’t see the face, but the voice sounded like his own. He threw his head back, causing the enemy to lose his grip. Warm blood dripped down the back of Salem’s neck. He knew it was not his own blood. He jumped to his feet and turned around to see a face much like his own. The relative had blood gushing from his nose.“Yeah, I was the chosen one. Still am. Just not the way you think,” Salem said. The estranged family member darted toward him. Salem punched him in the throat, killing him instantly. As he got a better look at the guy who was about his age, Salem couldn’t believe how much they looked alike. They could easily have been mistaken for brothers, if not twins. He guessed the kid must have been a cousin.Seeing the familiar face made Salem emotionally and physically tired. It was too much too handle. As he started to run, he felt a sharp pain in his upper right thigh. He looked down to see a gaping wound. He stumbled over to his dad and leaned against him.“Dad, there’re so many of them. How are we going to possibly beat them?”“These are the front lines. They sent their weakest first to wear us down.”“What? Dad, we’re going to lose!”“Salem—your leg! Take your top shirt off and wrap it around your wound. Try to do it under your jeans. If they see that, they’ll all focus on you. I’ll cover you.” Salem’s dad backed him up to a large tree trunk.
