The Brown House
Book Blurb:
Some secrets should never be revealed…
Brylee Branson begrudgingly made the excruciating move with her family from the warm sandy beaches of California to small town living in New Jersey. As if she wasn't miserable enough, they've moved into a creepy old house that everyone in the area claims is haunted. Brylee dismisses the idea of ghosts and hauntings, until she begins to see and hear things that can't be explained…
Brylee has no choice but to seek the help of new friends to unlock the secrets of this place she now calls home. But some secrets should never be revealed. Can the teens find a way to release the spirits imprisoned within the walls? Or will the curse claim them, too?
**My thoughts**
This was a delicious ghost story. It had so many of the elements I love: spooky noises, things that go bump in the night, a little bit of love, and a wicked secret history that doesn't let spirits lie. Even better, rumor has it that this story is based on some real-life events. That always helps a story to ring true and definitely adds to the creepy factor.
Characters grow in their relationships as secrets are slowly revealed. Brylee is attempting to reinvent herself in her new school and discovers she has a creepy talent. Her two neighbors and two other closest friends also go through tremendous transformations as their truths come to light. The conflicts start to resolve themselves and the story looks to be over. It could be over. This book could stand on its own. The way it ends, however, allows for the possibility for another installment. More secrets are still hidden and more souls need to be saved. The characters are going to be able to further challenge themselves. I would definitely read another book in this series and look forward to more works by Christy Sloat.
This is not the kind of book that you read during the bright daylight. To get the full effect, you need to read it at night, preferably during a thunderstorm, in an old house, by yourself. That's what I did.
I received an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
