Think "Star Wars" a New Hope or Star Trek or Hercules-the legendary Journeys. All of it tends to be laced with humor also. It just seems to pop out of nowhere LOL. Wyrd Wravings is a light hearted mix of scifi and fantasy stories told for fun and enjoyment.

Read an excerpt:

“We will begin with the most basic of spells,” said The Priestess on Margo’s first day of lessons.

Margo sat in a small, circular room on the second floor of the stone house. It was mostly empty, save for a marble table and the stiff wooden chair where Margo sat nervously. Unlike the rest of the house, the room had but one window, and judging by the view, Margo guessed they must have been inside the onion dome on the roof. The young witch tried not to fidget, as The Priestess circled around her as she spoke.

“There is magic that is practical, that you will need in every day situations, and magic that is impractical.”

“I do not deal in the impractical sort,” said The Priestess sternly, stopping directly in front of Margo, “love potions and beauty enchantments are amongst the kinds of frivolous spells you will not be learning here. Instead, I plan to teach you useful, direct, magic, which you can implement in most any situation. You are to take these lessons seriously, for you will never know when they might be of use to you. The difference between knowing practical spells and not knowing them, is a matter of life and death.”

Margo gulped and nodded anxiously, her eyes following The Priestess as she continued to pace about the room.

“For your first spell,” said The Priestess, taking her wand from her sleeve and nodding at Margo, her signal to do the same, “we shall be attempting a growing spell.”

The Priestess’s face contorted suddenly at the sight of Margo’s wand.

The young witch blushed. Her wand had been handed down to her by her grandmother Mary, and it was not in the best condition. In fact, the once wooden wand had been enchanted to have the look and feel of toad’s skin. Mary thought it would impress The Priestess.

Margo smiled nervously as she tried to hide the slime secreting from her wand and sticking to her fingers.

“That…wand, just won’t do,” said The Priestess delicately. Margo put the wand on the marble table, the gunk stretching as she tried to free her hand from it. She pushed the wand to the corner of the table, and pressed down hard on the cold surface, trying to wipe the glop of her hands. Her face turned red as she struggled to pull free, and finally an exasperated Priestess pointed to Margo’s hand with her own wand, “ Divisio.”

With a slight “pop” Margo was free, but still covered in slime. She shook off what was left of it on the floor with a few sharp flails of her arm, smiling bashfully at her teacher as she did.

The Priestess walked over to the small window facing the front of the house. She opened it, and pointed her wand at a weeping willow that adorned the road leading to her front door. Margo heard a loud CRACK and suddenly, a tree branch was entering the room.

The Priestess placed her wand in her skirt waist, and pointed one long, jagged, fingernail in the direction of the bough. A green light shot from her black nails, cracking the limb, and sending the branch back into the woods from whence it came. The Priestess brought the remaining wood further into the room in her net of brilliant light, spinning it as she did, her eyes steady and focused. As she did this, the branch whittled down bit-by-bit, splinters flying every which way, and darting dangerously close past Margo’s face. The Priestess’s flesh was the color of rusted copper as the viridescent light danced off her skin and Margo could see the wand she was crafting beginning to take shape.

Meet Karen Ann Hopkins, author of 'Forever (Temptation Series #3)'

Today we would like to welcome YA author Karen Ann Hopkins. Her Temptation series involves an illicit romance between an Englischer girl who attempts to become Amish to be with the love of her life. Forever is the third book in the series. Here, she tells us more about writing her series, and a bit more about herself. Thanks for stopping by!

What was the inspiration behind this series?
Six years ago I moved from the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee to a northern Kentucky Amish community. I brought twenty-four horses with me and set up my established horse-back riding business at the new farm. Within a few weeks a stream of Amish teens were coming to the arena to participate in riding activities with the non-Amish kids. Watching the interactions between the two groups, and observing some definite flirting going on, I began to wonder how a relationship between the two vastly different cultures could work out. It seemed impossible and incredibly intriguing at the same time and the seed for Rose and Noah’s story grew in my mind.
What kind of research did you have to do for it?
I dedicated two years to learning as much as I could about the Amish way of life. Besides my observations at the arena, my life was inundated with the Amish culture as Amish girls babysat my younger children, Amish teens hung out with my own teen sons, as I drove the Amish women to town to shop and even took a Tennessee vacation with an Amish family. I attended five Amish weddings and numerous schoolhouse benefits and private dinners with neighbors. When I’d gained enough experiential knowledge, I began writing and a year later, I had an agent and Harlequin Teen had purchased the forbidden love story.
How likely is a story like this in real life?
It’s very likely. I know of two girls in my own community who left the Amish to be with their ‘outsider’ boyfriends. Both girls were shunned by the Church, but still have limited contact with their families. One of the girls is now happily married and neither regrets her decision to become ‘English’. Even though the Amish attempt to live isolated lives, there is always some contact with the outside world and secret romances develop all the time, but because of the huge cultural and religious faith differences, relationships rarely last.
Did you adapt any of the language or storyline to make it a more relatable story for "Englischers" to enjoy?
Yes, I sure did. The Amish are a bilingual people, but Pennsylvania Dutch (a form of German) is their birth language. They will speak English when communicating with outsiders or in the presence of their non-Amish neighbors, but I’ve learned that when they are in their homes or only among other Amish, they tend to speak Pennsylvania Dutch. The Amish learn the language through their families and community and since there aren’t any books teaching it, it would be very difficult for an outsider like me to learn it well enough to incorporate it too heavily in the pages. Although, I do pepper words and phrases throughout the books that are familiar with the Amish culture, I especially paid close attention to the dialect, words and tone that my Amish friends used when speaking English. I believe Rose and Noah’s story have a realistic and sincere feel because of my focus on this part of the Amish speech patterns.
Have you shared your books with anyone within the community?
All of my Amish neighbors know about the Temptation series and many of the teen girls, young women and even a grumpy old man have read the books. One girl who had already left the Amish to be with her non-Amish boyfriend told me she cried through Temptation, because she related so strongly to what Noah was going through. For the most part, the reactions from the neighbors has been very positive, although it’s taboo for them to discuss their children having romances with outsiders and the possibility of anyone leaving the community, so there are those who have shied away from the series.
What is it about the Amish that makes them such a good group for stories?
It really is amazing that hundreds of thousands of people in the United States and Canada, especially in the Midwest, live their lives like those living more than a century ago. They turn away from modern conveniences and technology, oftentimes having many hardships, to live a quieter and highly religious existence. You would think that the population would be dwindling away, but instead, it’s growing by leaps and bounds. The Amish have large families, sometimes as many as ten or more children and many of those kids are remaining in the culture, even after they step out and see the world for a bit. The young people have discovered that the lifestyle that we all take for granted and can’t live without is not all it’s cracked up to be in their eyes. I think the fact that they are so different from us and choose to remain that way, makes them an especially intriguing group.
What do you think the draw to Amish literature is for readers?
The Amish are stuck in a strange time-warp, where they see the modern world all around them, yet they reject it. Why do the women put up with the anti-feminist structure of their culture? Why don’t they refuse to do laundry by hand or secretly sneak birth control so that they don’t have to give birth in the double digits? The questions can go on and on and usually infuriate the curious, but at the same time that we’re exasperated by the life choices of the Amish, we’re also fascinated at the stubborn strength of these people. We respect them and want to understand why they live the way they do and what really makes them tick.
What is the draw for writers?
For me, the more I became immersed in the Amish community around me, the thirstier I became for knowledge about them. Some things about their culture infuriate me, while other times I’m humbled by their ways. They are so different from us and so secretive, which makes them a delightful group to write about.
Have you written other Amish books, or have plans for any more? What about any other kind of project?
Yes, I’m excited to say that I’ve written an adult Amish mystery that will be available on Kindle this year! It’s a story about the interweaving lives of three unlikely people in an Indiana Amish Community and the devastating results when a rebellious teenage girl is found shot to death in a corn field during the harvest. Serenity Adams is the newly elected young sheriff in the country town of Blood Rock and besides dealing with the threatening behavior of her predecessor, she now has a dead Amish girl on her plate. At first glance, the case seems obvious. The poor girl was probably accidentally shot during hunting season, but when the elders of the Amish community and even the girl’s parents react with uncaring subdued behavior, Serenity becomes suspicious. As she delves deeper into the secretive community that she grew up beside, she discovers a gruesome crime from the past that may very well be related to the Amish girl’s shooting. Serenity enlists the help of the handsome bad-boy building contractor, Daniel Bachman, who left the Amish when he was nineteen and has his own reasons from his dark past to help the spunky sheriff solve the crime that the family and friends who shunned him are trying desperately to cover up. Serenity’s persistence leads her to a stunning discovery that not only threatens to destroy her blossoming romance with Daniel, but may even take her life in the end.
Who are some of your favorite writers about the Amish?
I’ve enjoyed spending time at book fairs with both Virginia Smith and Shelly Shepherd Gray. They’re lovely women and put out great books.
What do you think of shows like 'The Amish Mafia' and other exploitation of the Amish way of life?
I haven’t watched any of them myself, but I understand why people tune in. The allure of the mysterious Amish way of life is very appealing in a visual format. Unfortunately, these types of reality shows are probably not very honest portrayals of the Amish people and their youth.
What is something readers may be surprised to learn about you?
The only writing experience I had before the Temptation series, were the 4H horse club and farm activity articles that I’d submit to the local newspaper. I never took a writing class in my life and learned the process through trial and error and the wonderful suggestions given to me by professionals along the way.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Although, the Temptation series has had many accolades and a growing fan base, there are those people who find the anti-feminist Amish way of life very distasteful. From my own experiences, the lifestyle is definitely not my cup of tea, but I can understand whole heartedly how some women would find a life of raising a family in the country with a strong man alongside her who steps up to take on the responsibilities of his family a tempting thing. In the end, it’s about the freedom of choice. I hope that if a reader takes only one thing away from the Temptation series, it’s that they realize how important it is for every woman to make her own decisions about what makes her life happy. It’s just as honorable and worthwhile to be a mother of ten and homemaker as it is to be a highly educated powerhouse career woman.

I love to hear from my readers! Please contact me on Facebook with your thoughts on the series or any questions about the Amish you may have. Thanks!
Karen Ann Hopkins

A Day in the Life of S.P. Cervantes, author of 'Always and Forever'

Andi's Young Adult Books is pleased to have author S.P. Cervantes joining us today. She is a fellow teacher and author and shares how she manages to balance the hectic life of each profession.

A Day in the Life of S.P. Cervantes

Being a mother of three, a wife, a teacher, and a writer is all about balance. During the summer I am markedly better at all of the above. I have time to be with my kids, clean, cook, and develop new lessons for the school year.

My life during the school year is hectic. Every morning I wake up at 5am. I check emails and read up on blogs for good books to read. I like to see how authors are promoting their books since I am new to the publishing world, and early in the morning is the best time for me to check some sites out.

After getting my kids ready for school, I spend my day teaching and prepping lessons. When I get home the crazy begins. Between shuffling my son to his after school activities and entertaining fur year old twins, I take a break from it all and go on a jog. I get some of my best ideas for my stories while running and listening to music. I find myself laughing, crying, and sometimes stopping to type an idea on my phone while running. I am not sure why I get my ideas while running or right before bed, but there it is.

Weekends are where I get most of my writing done. My husband always allows me an entire day to hide away, ignore my kids, andwrite. It is in those moments that I feel free to express myself without worrying about the clock or interruptions.

Every night, after I tuck the kids into bed, I either spend an hour or two writing or reading. It is a constant battle because there are way too many amazing books out there to read, but I have just as many floating around in my mind begging to be told.

In between the craziness, I find time to research marketing, ideas for my book, and even time for my husband. It’s a crazy life, but I wouldn’t change a thing about it. Well, maybe to be a NY Times best seller!

New Adult Paranormal Romance
Date Published:
11/13/2013

Twin sisters Ava and Hannah were ripped from their peaceful seeming lives into a whirlwind of attacks and war only to learn the real truth about their existence.

Nothing was as it seemed anymore and may never be again. They had already lost their father in childhood now they have to cope with their mother’s kidnapping as they watch those sworn to protect them risk their lives.

Dalton

I stood motionless watching her as she lay peacefully, giggling quietly to herself as she dreamed. I noticed for the first time the delicate dimples she had when she smiled. The sun was beginning to set and the air had more of a chill than when we got here. The time had melted away.

My thoughts were quickly interrupted by a loud growling sound. It went from sounding human to a deep, foul terrifying rumble of excitement. I knew instantly that was our enemy. I wondered what form they had taken to capture Ava. The Sabatinos rarely did anything in their human form. They thrived on the fear they instilled in their victims by changing forms.

Ava sat up quickly, ripping her earphones off and threw them an inch from where I was hiding. Her eyes were full of fear.
Suddenly an enormous creature emerged from the clearing charging straight to Ava. My heart raced as I quickly ran from the opposite side of the clearing as fast as I could to get there before the creature had. Although I could run much faster than a mortal, so could this creature if it were truly a member of the Sabatino coven. This was going to make for a much more difficult fight.

The creature was closing in on Ava quickly with evil red eyes fixated on its prey. I wasn’t sure if I could make it in time. Overwhelming fear shot through my entire body. I wasn’t just failing Connor, I was failing our coven.

Ava stood frozen. I started to yell for her to run when she suddenly lifted her shaking arms and yelled at the creature. Right then the creature was frozen in midair and Ava fell to the ground unconscious.

"Huff is extremely creative while giving the theme of good and evil a fresh new look."
"A NEW TASTE OF FANTASY"
"I can't really find one word for it! To my mind, I find it as an amazing combination of the bravery from Lord of The Rings, the friendship from Harry Potter, the struggle from The Hunger Games (I haven't read the books yet but I am familiar with it) and it also gave me the nice feeling like the one you get after reading Artemis Fowl! It is a really wonderful combination of all the elements that there should be in a book of this kind. Do not imagine it as a copy of the books I have mentioned before because it is not! Huff brings us a new world, Everville, a fascinating place that we can picture while he reveals it's hidden magic."
